Hi anybody,

since this is my first posting, initially, I think of stating a few words about who I am...

Playing trumpet for 6 years now (after some flirtatiousness with baritone horn and altosax), I currently play in a local big band in South Western Germany and take lessons from Detroit based Gary Barone, who settled down in Freiburg some years ago.
My musical preferences are just about anything from classical to nearly any jazz style.
After browsing this great forum for some time now (since there ain't any comparable platform in Germany), I now decided to register and participate here and then.

So, my question today is as the thread's subject.

I own Michel Camilo's "One more Once", recorded 1994, including some incredible performance by Chris Hunter on alto, Smitty Smith and, on the trumpet side, Michael Mossman and Jon Faddis, those cats

Does anybody of you guys know any other recordings in that Latin Rock style that are recommendable? Unfortunately, this CD was Michel's only recording with a big band, particularly such a strong one.

Thanks for reply,

Otto

Otto,

Welcome to TH!

Check out Jesus Almany and his band, Cubanismo!, at http://www.rosebudus.com/cubanismo/

Also, get the DVD, Calle 54. The Tito Puente segment is worth the price alone!

Best,

Jim

Cubanissimo is a good group...I saw them perform about 9 months ago, nothing special musically really but it's nice feel-good music and the trumpet player can scream.

Thanks, Jim & AOT, for your suggestions, I'll keep an eye on those.

Unfortunately, the Calle54 DVD isn't available yet in Germany, and RC1 DVDs won't run on my (RC2) player. So I'll have to satisfy with the CD

Best regards,

Otto

Hey,

Erin wrote a pretty cool piece. Its under the thread in the lounge about the TH composers. If you could get a group together I'm sure Erin wouldn't mind geting you the score to it.

P.S.- "EL Tiburon"

Nick

Hallo Otto!

Check out Chico O´Farill. "Carambola" and "Heart of a Legend" are great latin-jazz big band albums with lots of sizzling trumpets. Also, Michael Mossman has an album out, "The Orisha Suite". It´s a small group, not a big band, but fantastic stuff!

Check out any of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Bands from the late 40's on for that great Afro-Cuban Big Band sound he pionered. Dizzy was alive in front of a big band it was in his heart and his playing is unreal nothing backed him like a roaring big band.

Thanks for your post, too, Martin!

I'll have a look at O'Farrill's stuff, lucky enough to have a quite good Jazz Records Store nearby

I hate to admit it but I must be addicted. I've listened to nothing but Arturo Sandoval's "Hot House" for the last week. And I mean all shift long at work and the hour drive to and from home. (okay kicked in an hour of Complilation)

Please consider "Hot House." I can't believe I waited this long to get it.

Track 9-- 3mins. 20 secs. look out MF.

Here are my recommendations:

1- Arturo Sandoval - Danzon and Latin Train
2- Cubanismo - The Best of Cubanismo
3- Humberto Ramirez - Portrait of a Stranger and Paradise
4- Nueva Manteca: Afrodisia, Bluesongo, Varadero Blues and Let's Face the Music and Dance
