Dave Hickman mentioned this at my presentation on Mendez at the ITG conference. Here's some more specific info. Pretty cool - and free!

Looks like Malcolm McNab will be playing the solo part. I will be there. Can't wait!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

I just returned from LA after hearing both performances of "Concierto para Mendez." Very moving (I cried several times), beautiful, and well staged.

Malcolm McNab was terrific. He played about 50 pages of music and displayed great poise and effortless in technique. After the shows, I spoke to him about the great job he did. He said that the played the 55 minute operatta yesterday two times. Then, after the two shows today, he said "My chops feel like a truck ran over them."

The visuals projected on a huge screen, the orchestra, the singers, etc. were outstanding. Both concerts were sold out.....3,500 people each.

It was filmed for Univision and will be aired sometime. I hope they make it available as a DVD, too.

Any other comments from people attending? Please chime in.

Dave Hickman

I thought it was very interesting that Mr. McNab played almost everything in the concert on his Schilke Eb. He made it sound magnificent.

Yeah, Malcomb plays E-flat most of the time. The E-flat he used during the performances was loaned to him by a member of the orchestra section. It seems that Malcolm dropped his own horn the day before the opera!

That would be, most likely, Tim Morrison.

No, Tim wasn't playing. I believe it was a woman.
