I would say... I am an average player! But I have a big recital coming up and I would like to do good at the recital.... So i left the high note playing (for awhile)! I started to do some buzzing exercises and other stuff to strengthen my lips. No that i have minimized the mouthpiece pressure in general. I am noticing that the tip of my tongue it coming into play. .... before..... I would force notes out for volume sake. Now it seems that I have a more refined tone and I can move around the horn a little bit better.
Listening to Wynton Marsalis Carnival of Venice. It becomes very evident that he doesn't struggle very much when it comes to difficult passages. The term I am coming up with is.....BECOMING AN EFFICENT PLAYER!
I was wondering what other people thought on the subject. Let me know.
Thanks
Roel

...becoming efficient...
Here are some of the symptoms of an inefficient aperture [too open, or too closed lip position]....
TOO open/spread problems:
--Air in tone
--no pp-ppp control
--excessive mpc pressure
--no lip or mpc buzz
--brick wall range
--plays flat with slides in a long way
--blatty sound
--inaccurate pitching
--Inability to switch registers quickly / find's it hard to play long phrases without running out of air / lack of cresc + dim.
Try this ....play a 2 octave scale starting on G on top of the stave slurring all the way down and back up again in quavers/eighth notes at mezzoforte. This is difficult to do without breaks in the sound/tonal quality if your too open or spread. Now do it on Ab / A / Bb / B / C. [It is not a range test] ...more info in my book... _________________ Regards, Roddy o-iii

Roelf,
Have you read "The Balanced Embouchure" by Jeff Smiley? It's a steal for $35. It has really helped me. It comes with exercises and the most Godawful CD of the exercises being played correctly that I have ever heard. Anyways... I think you should take a look at it. I know that I would have loved to have had it before my senior recital. You will definitely get results.
