It's so sad for a father to outlive the son that way. _________________ Daniel Gianola-Norris |

It says he was cremated but doesn't list the burial site. Maybe Mr. Naus will check back in this thread and inform us.

He is buried in Boston,in fact across the street from where I live. I am not familiar with the details of the funeral. If you are in Boston and interested in visiting the grave let me know I will be happy to take you there. |

Thanks Wayne, maybe someday I will get into Boston and visit the gravesite. Back in the early 70's I was in high school and I attended a "Chase" concert at Dartmouth High, I did not know who Bill was before the concert but my jaw dropped when he started to play and I will never forget that night. He is true trumpet legend and sadly missed.

A couple of years ago there was a gentleman at the New York Brass Conferance( I believe he used to be his manager) who was marketing Chases's re-issued CD's.
Two things I will never forget. First was that when I stepped up to the CD sales table their was a Shilke trumpet all twisted and banged up on the table.......just laying there without any explanation. It turned out that was the horn Chase had with him during the fatal accident.
The second thing I will never forget was seeing Chases son at the tribute concert. He is about my age. I kept thinking what a loss it was to him......growing up without a dad. I don't believe his son is a trumpet player........I wondered if he realized what an amazing musician his dad was and the way he still moves trumpet players today. |

I would have loved to been at the reunion concert, I heard they were making a DVD of the concert but haven't seen anything yet if it is going to be released.

That "gentleman" you speak of is Tommy Martin. Do a search on him, and you will find "interesting" information.

Yes, that is the trumpet. Next to the picture of his trumpet is the story of how he got started on playing a B6. The ballet trumpet player who inspired him to play that horn is my teacher/mentor, Mitch Jellen. He had no idea who Chase was when Chase came up to him during a ballet performance, looked in the pit, and said something like "sounds great dude". He gave Mitch his business card and asked him to come down to a studio later that night where he was recording his new album. He did not know who the gentleman in the leather jacket was but he went down to the studio based on suggestions from other players in the ballet. He tells me that to this day, he has never heard anyone play as strong as Chase played in the studio that night. |

Great thread. Thanks for posting the pic.
I made a pilgrimage to Dorchester to see the grave back in the early 1990s.
For those who wish to make the trip. Bill is buried (not cremated) at Cedar Grove (920 Adams St.) in Dorchester, MA.
The grave is located Lot 3514 Hemlock, Row 22, Section 22.
Bill died in a plane crash at Jackson, Minnesota on August 9, 1974 near the Jackson County Airport at approximately 6:30 p.m. when the twin engine plane he was a passenger in (along with three fellow band members, a pilot, and a guest of the pilot) stalled and crashed. This was the same Friday that Nixon resigned from office and was walked out to the helicopter.
Leach Funeral Home in Jackson, MN did the prep for the family and Keohane Funeral Home in Boston took care of the burial. The plot was purchased by Bill's father John (45 Brunswick Street, Squantum, MA) and the burial occurred on August 14, 1974.
It was a sad day for jazz and I often wonder what Chase would have done if he had lived. _________________ Scooter Pirtle

Is there any word yet on when the DVD of the Tribute Concert will be available? I googled for it, and couldnt find any reference to it. I missed it and would love to see it. Any info would be helpful.
Saw the MF tribute DVD and it is great !

So are there re-issues of any of the Chase albums... I've got three of them (maybe all he ever did I'm not sure of that) on vinyl but would really like to find some CDs so I wouldn't have to hear the pops and cracks of the old records. |

Hello all,
I bought my Chase CD's through Walking Frog. They specialize in recordings of band music Jazz and solo performers/groups. The three albums are out on 2 separate discs. Be sure to check out the youtube entries under Bill Chase. Pretty cool!!!!!!!!!! _________________ Christian K. Peters
