I saw the Baltimore Symphony do Mahler 5 last night. I was very impressed with the brass section as a whole and especially the trumpets. Mr. Balio played with great power and expression. I loved his sound. I really enjoyed how he could be loud and edgy one moment, and on the next entrance play softly and warmly. 2 questions popped into my head: I thought he plays monette.. but from what I could see (I was up in the center tier) the horn looked silver to me. Anyone know? Also, Langston Fitzgerald was not there, is he on leave right now? Overall I was very impressed. I don't think Baltimore gets enough credit or publicity as some of the other slightly smaller orchestras. They sounded great. _________________ Brian Montgomery

I could be wrong, but I believe Mr. Balio plays Monette mpcs. As for Langston Fitzgerald III, I think he left the BSO. There has been some turnover in the Orchestra since the
arrival of the new conductor. |

Fitz is at Penn State University. He is the Professor of Trumpet.
I don't think the opening in Baltimore has been announced yet.
Fitz is an excellent teacher. He was one of Tage Larsen's mentors.

Monette is making their light weight horns with a silver finish for those who want it. I know I've seen Mr. Balio playing them in the past so maybe he has a silver one now?! _________________ Matt Cyr

It could have been that lightweight one. It deffinitely wasn't one of the heavier monettes. It didn't look or sound like it. However, the third/asst. did look like he was playing a monette or something raw brass or gold plated. A Rene Hernandez is listed in the program as a season substitute, but Mr. Fitzgerald's name is also still listed. Now that you mention it, I had heard about his appointment at Penn State. _________________ Brian Montgomery

Yeah,
Balio is on the Monette "Extreme team" lol. He's probably playing one of the silver plated lightweights. I know Chris Gekkers' new Bb is a Monette lightweight and it plays wonderfully. Seems Monette has come full circle.

Howdy !
Well... Andrew played in the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for a few years,
So I know some stuff about him.
Andrew does have a Monette trumpet.
A Eb.. I'm not sure if he a got a C.
But he plays a Yamaha C trumpet.
I heard that in Baltimore they all play Yamaha.
Yamaha are their sponsers.
And I heard that Andrew hates Bach trumpets and he loves the Yamahas.
So he plays a Yamaha C trumpet.
The IPO got a monette trumpet and Andrew used to play it alot.
But it wasn't his.
So I think the silver trumpet you saw was a Yamaha.

Tal,
Be careful what Yamaha (or any other company) tells you. Just because they are sponsored by Yamaha doesn't necessarily mean they play on them. It only means they get their publicity photos with them and a couple quotes usually ending in something like "...Thank You Yamaha!". When I was studying with Gould, he was sponsored by Yamaha. He played a Bach C exclusively.

I don't know about full circle but I get the feeling he couldn't sell those big boys anymore and going back to the light horns is a way to keepo making $. People just don't play those big monsters in professional settings.
In Peace,

Is Rene Hernandez a NEC grad who freelances in Boston? The name sounds familiar. Anyone know? Rene are you out there. I could be way off.
