Are there any stand-outs in the GA-NC-SC area? |

Atlanta Area:
1. Larry Black - retired member of ASO, Cichowicz student
2. Chris Martin - principal ASO - student of Charles Geyer
3. Mark Hughes - assistant principal ASO - student of Cichowicz
4. Michael Tiscione - 4th Trumpet ASO - student of Geyer
I don't know if these guys teach - but the ASO trumpet section seems to have a pretty significant "Chicago" influence.

I'm sorry, tomba mann, I meant to ask around and try to look up a couple of teachers... I'm not up on who plays where -- maybe John (my fellow moderator) can help out some. Given the legacy of the CSO and many, many sound-based teachers around, I suspect that most orchestral players (many, if not most, of whom teach) -- and many other stylists -- in the U.S. (and across the pond, as a couple of threads here have shown) subscribe to the Chicago school. It might be best, not knowing exactly where you are located, to simply ask around locally. Call the local orchestra players and colleges, for starters.

I would suggest Fred Mills in Athens, Georgia. While he may not have a specific connection to anything "Chicago", he is a trumpet legend, an amazing player, a very perceptive teacher, and a nice guy.

Tromba Mann --
I have had the privilege of working with Mike Tiscione and Chris Martin, and I cannot say enough good about these two young horses! I am going to try to get a lesson with Chris Martin this week (if I can get him on the phone). I'll let you know how it goes. He is doing the Arutunian with the Georgia Brass Band on May 20, and he sounds TERRIFIC. If you're interested, visit the GBB website, http://www.georgiabrass.com for details about the concert.
I have heard great things about Mark Hughes teaching, and I have also had alot of exposure to Larry Black's students. He is truly a gifted teacher -- all of his students play their !@#$'s off. I would recommend starting with Larry -- his reputation is impeccible, and the few times I have worked with him on jobs, he has been very laid back. Besides, since he is getting ready to move up to NC, you need to get at least one lesson with him before he goes! Email me through the post here, and maybe the two of us can blow some duets sometime! I'd love to meet a few new guys in town!
All the best,
Paul Poovey |

Forgot one critical thing! Chris Martin is one of Larry Black's former students...that ought to be enough of a plug!

Pook,
Larry is moving to the Brevard area. He has a house already, and the word is that he will move as soon as his house here in ATL sells.
