I think the redeeming value I found was in the brass quintet playing. I'm running the rehearsals, arranging and selecting all the music, and can do a fair amount of outside playing with the group. It's much more satisfying that way.

JGulyas how does leave work for the band? i recall my dad got something like 20-30 days a year off, don't recall exactly… but he had an office job for a good bit of the time I rember him being in… can you just request off like most other jobs and get the day off, or do you all go on leave together?
Just wondering
Thanks again

Mark,
In the smaller bands, everyone takes leave (vacation) at the same time. So, basically the band shuts down for two weeks twice a year; usually during Christmas and after July 4th. In large bands, like the one I'm in now, they divide the band and split the leave periods for summer leave. Half the band gets leave the first half of July, and the other half gets leave the last part of July. During Christmas the band shuts down totally for 2 weeks.

"Large" bands are 45 member groups and "small" bands are around 35. The large bands have spots for oboe, bassoon, etc whereas the small bands don't. You're a lot busier in the small bands and basically that means if there's a gig going out, you're on it. The large bands either have a rotation or specific personell assigned for the gig.
