I would like some feedback from y'all. The local swing band that I play the lead book for is doing a "hangar dance" at a regional airport this Saturday night. We do it every year, and a lot of Vets attend, in uniform. Our leader (and vocalist) gives us the set list ahead of time. I have posted it below. For those of you who do this sort of thing, are the tunes he picked similar to what you all play? As you can see, he does a lot of the old Miller era tunes (which I really dig).
Just curious for feedback...Thanks...

OMG, what a blast! Just like stepping back in time, Mike.
I can tell you that your list has lots of songs I have heard in swing bands here, plus some I don't even know. Sounds like a great set list to me.

The set list has potential, but it's the attitude of the band that makes the difference. have fun with it.

Who is your lead player? I just hope that he - or she - can cut the book. _________________ Dave Wondra

Oh brother............
Seriously, those are some great old tunes. I wish we could make our living playing that kind of music..
And yes; the band has a great attitude. They love playing the chestnuts, and the audience members (the older ones) have told us on previous occasions it is like stepping back into time... |

It looks like a good set list. I hope the gig goes very well!
Yes ... the music from this era is a blast to play, and fun to listen to as well. www.inthemoodlive.com is a show I'm playing right now. We've been out for almost three months, and we're playing our last week in Honolulu, HI. This show has been working tours on and off for th better part of 13 maybe 14 years so far. Granted there are is the 'older' crowd in the audience, but it's amazing how many younger people (as in in their 30's and 40's) show up and are on their feet at the end of the show. It seeems as though whenever this music is played, presented, and promoted well, it goes over well.
Hope you guys have a fun gig! All the best. _________________ Michael Manthey

It's amazing the difference the letter 's' can make. That's kind of like when I see "Turn the Brat Around" - (instead of "Turn the Beat Around") it just makes me laugh.
As for the rest of it, what you listed is very similar to the set lists we had when I was playing in a big band with many of the same tunes. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Very good set list with a good amount of variety in style and tempos and will be appreciated by that audience. Great fun! I grew up with those tunes, (I'm 65) as my late father, a reed player, either played in or led a combo which played hundreds of dances over many years for a wide variety of occaisions. I played with him a couple of years. The 9pc swing band I play in here is not quite as ambitious as this one, but we have fun playing a lot of those tunes. Our pianist/leader, 80 yr old Jack Bradke, does the arrangements and we play gigs at wedding receptions, retirement homes, jazz festivals, community arts venues, and such for nominal sums. _________________ Dave Rafferty Devillier Stencil (German) Besson 609

Great play list, Mike. Glad I'm not playing lead! The main difference in your gig and many of the one's I do is, yours starts at 8 and ends at midnight. If mine starts at 8PM, it is usually over by 10PM as the audience and the band gets sleepy by then. Not bored. It's just past most our of bedtimes.
