I was looking at an old horn my friend owns and there was spotting throughout the entire finish. What causes this? Perhaps in proper cleaning and rinsing? I'm assuming that one would just have to replate such an instrument? Thanks.

Is it lacquer or silver plate?

Is the lacquer or plating worn through?

You could try washing the horn in mild detergent (not hot water for lacquer) and wipe dry with a very soft cloth to see if the water spots will disappear.

If the horn is silver plate, it may tarnish after washing and drying, so you will have to use silver polish to clean like Hagerty's, Tarnshield or others.

Best wishes,

Lloyd
