Phil is most likely playing principal. If it is not, it could be John Ware, but I have heard it a few times...Am pretty sure it is Phil.

I think this is my favorite Quiet City recording; Philip Smith is just perfect. The Copland is wonderful also. Well worth getting.

For what I think is by far the best Quiet City recording, check out Chris Gekker's. It sounds as if it was written for him.

Another recording of Quiet City to check out (if you can find it) is the one Harry Glanz did in the '50's. It may have been the first recording and it is great. He plays it wiith a much freer style and in the louder parts, with more energy, than other renditions I have heard.

I'm fairly certain it's Phil Smith playing principal on the Symphony, also. Sure sounds like him, anyway.

Where can you find Gekker's recording of the Quiet City? I love his recording of the Ewazen Sonata.

I have it...somewhere. When I dig it up, I'll post the info. It's by far (IMHO) the best Quiet City out there.

Just do a search on Amazon.com. It's there along with most of his other recordings. I also highly recommend the CD with John Adams' "The Wound Dresser". Haunting.
