I'll start:
Wynton, Phil Smith, and Maynard are the "biggest names" that come to mind for me. What about you? |

On a rainy, cold, and dark Saturday in November of 1996 I play tested several dozen horns at Dillons with Fred Mills. He helped me pick the '73 Bach Strad. that I have and play to this day. There was not another person in the shop for hours. It was a great experience. |

When I was in the 9th grade, I was working as a bell boy at the local Holiday Inn. I helped Dolly Parton to her room (Back then she was married to Porter Wagoner). WOW, never seen anything like them before.......... |

Altho I've met and got to play with many great players, the one who had the biggest influence on me was Forrest Butchel.
I was at the Schilke shop in 1975 (when they were still on S. Wabash). They had opened the bottom floor for display & testing. I was talking w/ Scott Laskey, picking his brains like I always did on these trips.
After a few minutes he said "Let me introduce you to someone. Forrest, this is Tim."
I knew of his playing & mouthpiece reputation and started hurling questions at him. He looked at his watch. I said "Please don't let me keep you from anything" and he says "No, I was wondering if you had some time. Let's grab a couple of horns & do some playing."
The next 90 minutes or so were filled with trumpet stuff that I still do to this day.
If you're looking to meet well-known players, hang out at Dillon in New Jersey or Kanstul in Anaheim - no telling who might drop in.
I know this thread is meant to list big names that we've met, but there are countless MONSTER players out there who have little fame or recognition outside their local area, guys who can definitely hold their own against any recognizable name, and my hat goes off to them. _________________ Tim Wendt

Roughly in order of their careers, not necessarily in the order that I met them, better known jazz trumpet players that I have at least exchanged a few words with include:
Louis Armstrong (dressing room interview)
Roy Eldridge (nice chat a couple of times at Jimmy Ryan's)
Dizzy Guillespe (asked for an autograph at Lulu Whites and sang "Salt Peanuts" at Sandy's Jazz Revival)
Miles Davis (complimented him during a set break and didn't get cursed)
Maynard Ferguson (short chat after performance in Boston Public Garden)
Chuck Mangione (shouted "Hi" as he walked by at Newport)
Randy Brecker (complimented him at Newport)
Jon Faddis (several nice chats at clubs and a museum in Cambridge, Somerville and Lincoln, MA, over several years including a "discussion" about Jerry Callet's horns)
Arturo Sandavol (quick chat at Regatta Bar)
Roy Hargrave (complimented him at Regatta Bar
Terrence Blanchard (quick chat at Regatta Bar)
David Douglas (two nice chats at Regatta Bar)
Ingrid Jensen (long talk and a hug!in Santa Fe)

I have met everyone I have ever wanted to meet from Herseth to Miles Davis. Miles was actually a pleasant surprise. Trumpet pros as a whole are pretty accessible. I think they know we are all in the struggle together and feel our pain:) I only regretted meeting one trumpet player who I looked up to and will remain nameless. I don't believe in making snap judgements. I am hoping he was just having a bad day.
I greatly enjoyed watching the sincerity of Chris Botti after a concert as he spoke with two of my students. He was genuinely interested in what they were working and their trumpet interests. When we left, he said goodbye using their names. I was impressed that he cared to remember- he is a first class guy.
Let me add a cool accidental encounter to this. I went up to Dillons later one Thursday evening. I entered their trumpet room and there was a gentleman in the far corner with his back to me. There was an open gig bag on the floor with a rotary valve Bb and a harmon mute. I have always been a huge Claudio Roditi fan. I looked at the gig bag and than the gentleman and thought, Claudio has big curly hair on is CD covers, that must not be him. I was thrilled when the gentleman turned around and it was Claudio with a haircut.
I did not want to bother him so I did not approach him. I had a handful of mouthpieces I was trying out. He came over to me and said, "Hi, I'm Claudio. I have to wait for the train for about an hour. Would you like an extra set of ears to help you select a mouthpiece?" He sincerely listened and helped me pick a mouthpiece and then we talked for a good while. I asked him about each of his CDs and he told me stories about each recording session and the equipment he used.
That was an awesome, awesome experience.

I worked weddings and other GB gigs with Leon Merian in the 80s. He and my mother-in-law were high school classmates and close friends in the 40s. |

I met Chris Botti this past September. He was a class act, willingly waited and greeted a line of fans that stretched out quite a bit. I was able to talk to him, and unlike some famous people he didn't blow me off. I was able to get a picture with him, and his autograph. One class act! _________________ Philippians 1:6 |

I got to meet Dizzy about 20 years ago when I was in high school. Small venue at a local community college. I went to get his autograph and hopefully chat after. Got the autograph, but he was sorta in the middle of talking with someone in the band. Nice guy though. _________________ "Stomvi" PhrankenPhlugel w/ Blessing copper bell
