This one's interesting--no crooks.

Wohlrab invented the crookless valve. He was issued a patent for it in 1950. the patent is here

http://www.google.com/patents?id=tipgAAAAEBAJ&dq=wohlrab+valve

The basic idea is to send the air up into the valve itself instead of into a slide.

I have two versions of Wohlrab trumpets - the crookless version that is linked above (in fact, the one linked is my trumpet) as well as the more common version that is only missing the 2nd valve crook.

That is the most remarkable trumpet I have ever seen. No way to adjust pitch/valve, but still really amazing!
I think it's a collector's item for sure.

The crookless trumpet is a bit stuffy to play, and it feels strange to hold. the valves are significantly larger around than a standard trumpet valve - similar to a Baritone valve or even larger.

It is more of a novelty than a daily player.

The trumpet that has only the 2nd valve crookless is much better - uses standard size valves.

It happens. In a previous life I wrote house appraisal reports in all caps. It's a little faster.

I think we need more to go on than mother of pearl valve buttons. Does the trumpet have a second valve crook? If you pull the middle valve out, does it have a hole in it that you can't see out the other side? If yes, then you have the 2nd valve crookless trumpet (I made that name up).

The value of the trumpet is whatever someone will pay you for it. Honestly, it isn't worth much. I paid $40 for my 2nd valve crookless trumpet on Ebay several years ago. Mine isn't in great shape. If yours is in good condition, maybe it is worth $100-$200.

Or maybe someone will think not having a 2nd crook is a novelty, and will give you more for it?

I paid quite a bit more for my crookless trumpet, but you already said yours isn't like that one.

Does it look like this one?

That's mine, quite nice to play although it would benefit from a valve job, easy to control. It is very lightweight despite quite thick brass, I wonder how the alloy is put together.

Wohlrab was a German maker, he made other "normal" trumpets too I believe. If you read German check this thread:

http://www.trompetenforum.de/TF/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11484

I can translate it later, when I'm not having a baby at my knee.

Ok, now I have searched the german trumpet forum, not much information but this is it:

Wohlrab trumpets were built by Bauerfeind in Nauheim, supposedly the man called Wohlrab was working for them, perhaps he headed the trumpet building department? There were several designs (American de Luxe, System 2000 etc.), alas they made not only these slide-less trumpets but also "normal" trumpets.

It is my personal belief that if these trumpets with internal second slide are engraved "Koriot" they were exported to the U.S. If they are engraved "Wohlrab", they were sold in Europe.

What is the serial number on your trumpet? Anyway, I believe that it must have been made after the WW2.

You can e-mail me photos to hk@kraxbb.se and then I will put them up here.

This is karl8671īs photos:

Interesting that many details are similar to mine, it looks like a regular version of the same trumpet, so I would guess that yours are from the 50's or the early 60's.

I have a trumpet that looks similar but it is a regular Bb trumpet called an "Argonaut" That is what is engraved on the bell. It has very nice engraving. The lead pipe says made in Germany.

When I say similar to your pics, I mean the two tone valve casing is very similar.

Has anyone ever heard of an Argonaut?

Plays nice, very lightweight.

Oh brother! Can you just imagine trying to clean the 'science experiments' out of the passages within those valve pistons? Very interesting instrument however.

Worth much is totally subjective.

As a collectible, it probably is worth approximately nothing.

As a player, it might be quite nice.

If nothing else, those mutes are in excellent shape and I, personally, would offer $50 for the set as a lowball. Individually on ebay they'd probably get more.

I don't know where you are but I would see if you could bring that horn to one of the top names, have it cleaned (if necessary) and have them evaluate how it sounds, blows, etc. I wouldn't take the first $50 that comes along.
