Is anyone aware of any classical instrumental pieces that Rafael Mendez would not do because they were even too difficult for him? I doubt if there are any as he did some of the most difficult violin virtuoso pieces but it would be interesting to know if even he had trouble with some. |

He recorded the stuff he was good at and wanted to play. He didn't do the Hadyn and Hummell and any baroque rep cause it wasn't his bag. He played what he wanted to and did it well. |

Mendez did performed and recorded at least the first movement of the Haydn and you can see the video here.... (middle of video)

What would be interested to find out, at least for me, if he ever played a trumpet other than Bb. Like a C trumpet, Eb, D etc Anybody know?

I think if you look at his discography you'll see he was interested in expanding the trumpet literature. Why play the Haydn and Hummel when that's what everyone else was already doing? It makes sense to pursue what interests you.

I think if you look at his discography you'll see that Mendez just wanted to play music. I'm no scholar, but performers like Mendez play music that showcases their abilities and allows them to express their emotions best.
Isn't that what most music is written for? To showcase someone's talent (both the player and the composer) and allow them to express themselves? That's surely true of the great opera arias and of the great concertos, including the Haydn.
Mendez played to express himself and entertain others. |

Mendez was certainly interested in making the trumpet more of a solo, virtuosity instrument than it had been
Best wishes. |
