|
|
Hey! Do any of you watch Survivor on Thursdays? There is a guy on there named Benjamin Wade (prefers to go by "Coach" or "Maestro") who claims to be (or have been) some big time extraordinary trumpet player. On his personal website he's described as a "Renaissance Man", avid outdoorsman, soccer coach, and symphony conductor. Here's part of his bio on the Susanville Symphony website:
Quote: | One of the greatest assets of the Susanville Symphony is in their Artistic Director/Conductor and his musically gifted leadership. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Benjamin J. Wade began as a child prodigy on Trumpet, making appearances with the Knoxville Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, and the New York Metropolitan Opera all by the time he was 17. Hailed as one of the best young trumpet players in the world, after winning the prestigious International Trumpet Guild Competition in 1988, Wade went on a full music scholarship to the University of Tennessee. |
Umm...in the world?? I did a search on him (guess I had too much time on my hands at the time...) and nothing came up on the ITG website or anywhere else except this same blurb from his symphony bio. After reading more about that symphony, I discovered that he was the founder of the group.
We all know, as trumpet players, we sometimes have a tendency to be "confident and outgoing" (very sugar-coated statement). But this guy seems to be really over-the-top-of-the-very-top!
There has been much discussion on TH lately about trumpet players pretending to be something that aren't, and I was just curious if anyone has ever heard of this guy?

Send Cathy Leach a note. Maybe this guy has "embellished" things a bit? |

As perhaps the finest trumpet player to ever grace the face of the earth, and being in the top 5 musicians on any instrument in the history of mankind, I must admit that this issue is of great concern to me. I know it's kind of silly, but I feel that the light that should rightfully be cast upon me is dimmed somewhat by the crowd of pretenders. _________________ paul

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this week...the previews show him "conducting" at camp and one of the girls rolling her eyes. I guess this'll be the episode that he pulls the "Maestro" rabbit out of the hat!
Mikeytrpt, what's Cathy's username? |

It's my opinion that a player has to be pretty damn good to win the ITG.
I know someone who won it and she was as good as anybody I have ever heard in the world. If that guy won it, then I say hats off to the guy. Bravo.
I wonder why he stopped playing... maybe a chop accident or something.
I say we dont make fun of him at any rate..

Not really "making fun of him"...I just think it's interesting that he was this Joe-Trumpet in his childhood and there's zero on the internet about him except what he has written about himself...AND there's zero pics of him (on the internet or his website) with a horn in his hand from that time period. We all know that when we were kids, we HAD to have our picture taken with our horn whenever we got the opportunity...most especially when we got some sort of award or pat on the head. It kinda goes with that "confidence and outgoing" thing that we have.
Not making fun....it's just interesting.

Well, who knows... Trumpet players seem to be particularly succeptible to the notion that the older they get the better they were.

When someone finds out for sure about his ITG claim, will you please post at least this definitive piece of information? If true, it would allow for at least some leeway in his presentation of himself. If not, well, we know where things will go from there... |

Funny, it seems like he's watching this thread, and wisely so! Now that we're close to knowing the truth, it looks like the haranguing can begin in earnest. To quote and rephrase Capt. Jame T. Hook: "Bad form Mr. Wade, putting oneself on a self-proclaimed par with Jens and Mr. Jackson, bad form indeed..." |

Well, not all of us. I don't think there are more than 1 or 2 of me with my horn when I was a kid. I was too intimidated by the "A" list players my pop gigged with to ever get my horn out when a camera was around. Being asked to play by Cat Anderson or Frank Rosolino would've been enough to make me want to hide for month! _________________ BKA! Mic Gillette was my mentor and friend.

(Would this count as "rolling on the floor laughing"???)
Check this out!!! Around 6 hours later, the symphony website has been updated:
Quote: | One of the greatest assets of the Susanville Symphony is in their Artistic Director/Conductor and his musically gifted leadership. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Benjamin J. Wade began as a child prodigy on Trumpet, making appearances with the Knoxville Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, and the New York Metropolitan Opera all by the time he was 17. Hailed as one of the best young trumpet players in the world, after winning the prestigious International Trumpet Guild Competition CG Conn Award in 1988, Wade went on a full music scholarship to the University of Tennessee. |
Hmm...Me thinks that the Maestro/Coach lurks and posts among us....
I'm glad the exaggeration has FINALLY been clarified. Since Survivor was taped months ago, it'll be funny to see what version he tells during the show. Like I said earlier, I saw him "conducting" in this week's preview, so this may be the week he talks up his "musically gifted leadership". Stay tuned..... |

On Survivor, don't they bring something from home with them? If he's a real player, he'll have his mouthpiece. Or he'll make trumpets out of conch shells or tree trunks... _________________ Getzen 800DLX cornet

Or he might bring his ego and a week's worth of gig stories...
