I just spend around five minutes of playing with as close to no pressure as I can get and even in those five short minutes of no pressure practice, I already have a light ring around my lips. I'm not sure if this is something I should be worried about. My band teacher told me that after playing you should have no ring around your lips if you play with the correct amount of pressure. Are my lips just abnormally sensitive or something, or is it just a natural thing to get a ring no matter how little pressure you use? Help. |

MT,
mouthpiece pressure is a necessity when playing the trumpet. Trying to play with too little pressure can be as harmful to your playing as using too much. A ring from the mouthpiece is pretty much a certainty.
Pressure is good, so long as the pucker of the embouchure is equal to the task. Its like shaking hands, if one person squeezes very hard and the other doesnt, the one who isnt is going to feel some pain. But if both people squeeze as hard as they can, neither will feel any pain. Try it with your friends.
Dont let people tell you that pressure is bad. While it can cause problems in excess, it is necessary for playing trumpet.
Dont worry about the ring on your lips. Its a badge of honor, wear it proudly! _________________ John Marchiando

I can set my horn on a table, blow a few notes and still get a ring on my lips. No worries with that. |

I'd worry about how your lip feels after playing (bruised? sore?) and not about how it looks. |

I also get a ring almost immediately, even when I play with minimum pressure (horn on book).
I stopped worrying about it after seeing Lew Soloff in concert... _________________ All the best
