Here's a fairly early John Heald cornet in A (Bb pipe is missing), circa 1890, with some very intricate and subtle engraving by an unknown artisan. It's rare to find a Heald with any decorative engraving at all. Heald learned his craft from Isaac Fiske, perhaps the greatest cornet maker of the 19th century (with the possible exception of E.G. Wright.) There is a nice capsule biography of John Heald here: http://www.horn-u-copia.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1205089021.
(Note the abalone valve button inlays, in case you think the people at Bach dreamt this up on their own.) |

Jeff (excelsiorcornetband):
Can you give me some pointers on how to find out who engraved my
1899 Conn Wonder Cornet? I know Conn's factories burned down a couple of times. I also cannot make out any engraved initials on the cornet. The serial number 51640 seems to point to that year (1899).
Any suggestions? _________________ For Online Lessons via Live Video, email

All the records went up in smoke, apparently, and other than possibly via some of the research done by Peggy Banks of America's Music Museum (formerly the Shrine to Music Museum) it would be nearly impossible to say. I compared mine to other signed examples of Gardner's work, including some in Dr. Bank's book "Elkhart's Brass Roots". She's researching a more complete book on Conn and their instruments, but it's such a massive project, and her curatorial duties interfere so severly, that we collectors despair of it ever actually seeing the light of day.
Some of the later (20th century) Conn engravers' names are known; but Conn had a well-staffed engraving department, and short of being intimately familiar with a certain worker's individual style, it's pretty much impossible to match a name with a certain piece of work. It's unfortunate, but so it goes. I'll ask some of my "Conn-man" friends if they can be of help. |

Looks like a rainy weekend here in the UK so I thought I would resurrect this thread.... I might even find a horn to take a picture of....
Post away your photographs...especially the ones of your latest acquisition.

Hey Erik
Very impressive use of technology.... love your Oiram. Mine has developed a great patina...if you like that sort of thing.
You sound great on it..... so now we have Eye Candy and Aural Delight...

Harrelson modified Ambassador with a Charlie Melk "A" bell (somewhere between a 37 and 43).

My Bach, 43 bell, recently re-done by Tom Green.
Scratched lacquer, Taylor rings and a first slide stop done by Tom, with Curry buttons and bottom caps.

Great looking horn, Brad. One of the nicest scratched finishes I've seen. _________________ "I tried practicing for a few weeks, and ended up playing too fast." Paul Desmond |

With apologies Mike . . .
This is one (on the right lest there be any confusion!) I whipped up last August out of my scrap box.

I think we were working with similar vision, eh? I just had considerably fewer resources.

My latest purchase, while it is still up on their website. This should arrive sometime next week. The pics are really well done, am hoping it will keep my '27 2-B company.
