I think I am going to play the Vivaldi Concerto for two trumpets. It goes up to high D and I am wondering which sort of trumpet should be used on that one? Which horns do Pros use and which would you suggest.
Appreciating any help.

Get a kanstul 1501. I just got one yesterday and I have not been able to put it down. My range improved asap with this horn and the tone is perfect. what a joy to play and after all of the horns that I have owned, the kanstul 1501 is my fav. Kanstul buils for Smith-watkins, blackburn, besson, burbank and the Wild Thing. The Kanstul horns are awesome. I love them much more than my 1939 NY Bach and it is a great horn as well. I have even owned and played a monette chicago and I prefer the Kanstul. very easy to play and the intonation is perfect in all keys and registers.I am astounded by the quality of any horn that is built by the Kanstul family. I highly recommend a kanstul 1501 to you. you can pick one up at http://www.dillonmusic.com for about $1400. |

I believe the vivaldi should be played on piccolos.
As for the kanstul, i totally agree. I have been a kanstul Bb user for a few years now and have fallen in love with the sound. Their pics and c's are also just as find instruments. They cost a little more than the standard bach but in my mind perform very well, are very flexible, and project nicely. _________________ "Creative minds have always been known to survive any kind of bad training."

Regardless of the brand of horn, I would go with C trumpets if possible and avoid using the Bb on this piece. Another option I experienced with the piece a few years ago that worked very well was that the 1st trumpet part was played on a C and the 2nd part on a piccolo (in A). This combination sounded very good to my ears.

Hello
I use the F/G picc. Which side you use depends upon which side works best on your make of inst. On the G side it is in F major and on the F side it is in G maj.

I totally agree, I think that it should be performed on the C, but I was responding to the question is terms of the Bb. I agree with Larry!! Hey Larry, still playing the Bel Canto Bb? How is that horn working out?
I would recommend a Kanstul 1510 C trumpet for this..... _________________ When I think of the perfect sound, I think practice. When I think of the perfect horn, I think Schilke. |

Yes, either do it with a piccolo trumpet, c trumpets, or a mix of the two, but not any Bb horns. I did do it on Bb horns, and it will sound fine for a church audience, but if you are in any sort of a serious venue, or doing it for the learning experience, then do it on the C's and the piccolos. |

Piccolo trumpet in G or A! It is so much easier that way. |

I have always performed it with two Bb pics. I think A pics would work just fine, also. I would not recomend using two drastically different horns (for example a Bb and a pic or other similar combination) as the tone colors would not match. The two trumpets should really sound like one. That's hard to do with horns that are built an octave apart. But whatever works for you. _________________ "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." |

cgooding is correct in that it is typically hard to match sounds mixing a pic and a C trumpet. Nevertheless, it did work the one time I did it, but I wouldn't recommend it as a routine approach. As many are saying here, use one type of trumpet or the other, but avoid mixes.

The Hickman Big Big suggests (and provides the music for) piccolo trumpet in G, which is what I used for my audition last year. I listened to several recordings, and as best I can tell all used piccolo trumpets; the ones which had liner notes indicated A, G, and C (yup, C!) piccolo trumpets were used.

thanx for the great advise!
I have a Bb/A Piccolo available and I think I am goint to use the A Piccolo for that. I don't think C trumpet would be the right choice, because it is too strenuos and it doesn't sound as good as piccolo.

If you have access to piccolo trumpet in B-flat or A, go with that. I believe that is what is heard most of the time on recordings, however, I could be wrong. I performed it on piccolo trumpet and prefer that way.
If you don't have the piccolo go with a C or D trumpet. Good luck, _________________ Matt Wirfel

Having heard it both on C trumpets and piccs, I'd go for the C trumpets but only if you can play it very easily. I couldn't and most players can't, but it sounds much richer on the bigger horns since much of the piece is in the staff, especially for the second player.

Pic in G puts you in F major A pic in Eb I have used Eb tpt. puts you in A. Tony Plog uses G pic with great results. |
