Good Lord!!! Had a rehearsal tonight with Mr. Shew, and WOW!, that guy is amazing. He was sitting down and looked like he was just taking it easy, but when he put that horn up to his chops he went off! He wasn't even reading the charts, just playing. At the end of our last chart he blew a dubba c for 10-12 counts, and totally blew my mind! So clean and powerful, and I don't even think he warmed up up, just took out his horns and started playing. The show is tomorrow night, will post again to tell of the show, but man, that guy is good...

Wow, You have a gig with Mr. "Z" Bobby Shew. That must be great. Heard him last year. Such sweet and easysounding solos but when he opens up .... a house without a roof. yeah, that was Bobby. Great trumpetplayer and great guy. Talked with him in the break.

Well, the show went great. Bobby played the crap out of everything, that guy is money on any style. In the master class he said some very interesting things about air and the internal pivot. Got me thinking, need to go out to LA and take a lesson.

Hey,
I am going to see Bobby Shew on Thurs. Night, while he is performing with the UC Santa Barbara Jazz Band. It should be great! Chops, are you in college, if so what college do you go to?

I got to hear Bobby Shew play last year at TMEA convention. He soloed on 3 or 4 charts and sounded amazing. For the last number they did, he brought Vizzutti out and those two traded solos and played some unison runs that were just amazing. The range battle happened at the end and it was amazing how big Shew's sound was compared to Vizzutti's. That was definitely a very memorable concert.

Bobby has visited here at Ball State before. This year we have Byron Stripling coming in. Can't wait for that either. Just as Chuck Mangione told me once, "keep on honkin' " |

On Thursday, I went and saw Mr. Shew at UCSB. He was awesome. I had never really heard him before, but I was so impressed that I bought 2 CD's of his: Salsa Caliente, and the cd with the Metropole Orchestra. Both are great CDs! |

To quote Pat West, Kennelly Keys manager....
BOBBY SHEW...ALWAYS GIVES THE GREATEST "SHEW" ON EARTH...and talked another professional player, that plans on buggin' out of his gig early and go down to Tula' to GO TO SHEW-SCHOOL..
He plays this Friday...9:00PM...TO 1PM!!! His approach to playing in so many ways...mirrors the early days of Claude Gordon...IF things are workin' sounding great....WHY FIX IT!.... and what he says...about the GREATEST TEACHER ON EARTH IS YOURSELF...(I have heard David Douglas say the very same thing)...he too was a Caruso student. Humm?? |
