You definitely need to check out Charlier Schlueter's (sp?) recording. He plays with the Boston Symphony. I have heard very good things about his interpretation and recording.

I think the best and most true recording of Hindemith is by Ray Mase...it's on a collection of Hindemith brass Sonatas by Summit Records, and it's a little pricey, but it's well worth it for what you get.

Hakan Hardenberger's is good. As is Edward Tarr's.

I, too, really like Ray's recording! Another readily available recording is Tom Stevens. Tom's recording is just incredile. However, probably my two favoite recordings are Charles Daval and Mark Gould. Both are hard to find, but can be dug up. Both guys just play so beautifully!

Not a fan of the Marsalis recording, since he's playing the double-bell monster Raja. It's just not a sound I can emulate. I do love his recording of Tomasi, Jolivet however.

I second NYCTPT on the Gould recording - it's a Japanese import with lots of other tasty stuff on the disc. Anyone know where I can get a copy?

Richard Steuart's is increble. He plays it on rotary Bb...probably the loudest and most intense recording you'll be able to find.

You can find it on his web site: http://www.latromba.com

I don't know how it could get any better than Thomas Stevens, though I am sure Gould sounds great as he always does.

Charlie Schlueter has a new cd out called "Trumpet Works" that has an amazing Hindemith on it. It was just released in June, 2003. Check that one out!

I still can't believe the Thomas Stevens recording, and love the Ray Mase just as much. I'll have to check out the Schlueter as well.
