I was told once by a teacher and a jazz pro that the key to getting the high notes was to have VERY solid and strong low notes with an ordinary embrochure.

Is this true? because I spend a lot of times practicing notes lower than C and pedal notes as well.

I'll dispute that thought. I mean carrying the thought to extreme you'd suppose that tubists would make the best screech players. They usually don't.

Pedal tones and low tones help some but not all trumpet players develop range. Unless a trumpet player learns to manipulate his embouchure successfully he'll have no substantial high range. I like to call the ability to buzz high tones as embouchure leverage. This kind of leverage is similar to the grasping of a lever close to the far end when trying to move a large load like a rock though the leverage involved in trumpet embouchure is much more complex.

If your teacher says that his high range developed from playing a lot of low tones then he probably had at least a latent tendency to play high notes to begin with whether he knew it or not. The production of strong low and middle register tones simply enhanced his physical ability to play high notes.

The problem most of us usually have at some time or another is that we are clueless about how to obtain the necessary leverage to play high notes. Usually tones in excess of high C.

If anyone's interested I'll elaborate more on various ways to obtain the "leverage" I'm talking about. My car is parked on a meter and the Meter Android is coming. Gotta go...
