Here's the Getzen specs, which I imagine you've already visited...
http://www.getzen.com/fluegel/eterna/895.shtml
And here's a YouTube of Phil Driscoll playing what I think is a large (.460) bore Getzen flugel. It's the 4 valve Getzen model, I think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYEBP-9sRKs
Hope it helps. Frankly, I've had two Yamaha pro flugels and have always felt 'stuffed' by the smaller bore configuration. Next time I pick one up I'd like to try a large American bore. Most people on here seem to prefer the smaller bore flugels. Good luck! If you get the horn - let me know. I'll follow the thread. _________________ Jonathan Milam

Well, I guess that depends on what your concept of a flugel tone should be.
IMO, no, it won't, because basically whatever horn you play, you're still going to sound like you.

I had a Getzen three valve circa 1978 and I didn't really care for the sound. Purchased a Yamaha in 1981 Loved the tone and feel of the horn sold that for a New model Olds which I hated cause it had major intonation flaws. . . .sold that for my current horn a Yamaha Bobby Shew model LOVE this instrument. . . .
my recommendation for what its worth! _________________ "Life Beats down and CRUSHES the soul, and Art reminds you that you have one" Stella Adler

I've got an 895S circa 2000ish and I can tell you that it does naturally have a "darker" sound than many other flugels I have played, most extensively the Yamaha 631. It is also freer blowing than most other flugels I have played.
Of course, as was previously mentioned, your sound is your own. But I can tell you that if that is the sound you are after, this horn can accommodate it easily. _________________ Kevin Peterson

I dont have big flugel history , my first flugel was a Yamaha student model back in 1990 , good horn but after some years i start to looking for something better so i order a custom Getzen 895 laq with gold brass bell and trigger , great sound , dark and round but was to big for me and i had some intonations issues so i sold it and i buy a vintage 70's Yamaha 731 and i stop to looking for a new one becose it serves my needs perfect , i only want to add a trigger but overal is a great horn.

If you play baritone horn then you will like the Getzen Flugel..
I play a 4-valve Getzen flugel and I love it.. I also play a Getzen bass trumpet and play euphonium occasionally.
For what I play the Flugel for, I want a strong , dark lower register and the Getzen fits that perfectly.. _________________ Kevin M.

I'd love to follow your recommendation, Paul, but I don't think a Yamaha Shew is in the budget. Thanks for the info though. [/quote]
When the updated Shew flugel (8310Z) and the Bergeron flugel come out next Spring, I'll be there will be more used 6310Z flugels available, and at lower prices. _________________ Dave Wondra

I bought a Benge 3 when they first came out (1976?), and traded it a year later for a used Getzen 3 valve. Those Getzens are great playing and sounding horns. I only sold it because I had a chance to get the big brother - Getzen 4 Valve. The 4V has a bigger bell, and sounds like:

How is our friend, Vaggelis? Does he still play the Al Cass doubler?
Best regards to you both. |
Hello , we all o.k , if you feel o.k with big horns this flugel is great just ad a trigger some times i realy want one for my yamaha .
The piece belongs to a friend monster bone player , i sold to him a Getzen capri Bb and now he doubles some times and "steal" from us some studio dates , Vaggelis plays trumpet and with the bone guy we play at Athens big band .

I have the 896 from around 1990, or so. I really like the sound, but I use a Giardinelli mouthpiece with a very deep "V" cup. That gives me what I consider the sound I was looking for. I don't like the way they sound with shallower mouthpieces. I tried a couple of Yamaha's when I was looking, and they just sounded too much like cornets to my ear. Once I got the slides where I wanted them, the tuning was good. _________________ Visit www.TrumpetFinder.com for the best deals on trumpets and accessories! |
