Haven't posted on here much in a while. I wanted to share something new that has just been completed in my shop. It is the first of it's kind that I have put together. It features:

-5" electroformed copper bell
-Stainless steel pistons (Made in Bavaria!)
-ML (.460) bore
- and of course a 4th piston!

This instrument was a special order, but it is something I would be very happy to do again.

I'm guessing the third slide throws on the left of the fourth slide, can't tell from the picture. I'm curious as to why the fourth valve? Quarter tones? Pedal register? Great project!

Very cool Michael!

How much does it weigh? It looks like it would be bell heavy. How is the balance in your hand?

Very, very, VERY nice! Could you do a cornet too?

How do the first open pedals play? (i.e. pedal C to pedal F#) I ask because those are the ones that are typically extremely hard to produce on most trumpets, while cornets and flugels can often play them relatively easily. One trumpet designer said it was due to the bell shape of most trumpets...

The link in Michael's first post shows a lot of angles and clarifies the relationship between the 3rd and 4th slides.

The text there states that the 4th valve drops the pitch by a 4th.

I love the work that Michael did for me on my Conn 80A -- if fact I'm about to use it at my daughter's second wedding (it's her grandfather's cornet that Michael modified).

I would really like to try that 4 valver -- might break my current (and probably psychologically and physically unhealthy) fixation with the double octave.

What's a "fixation with the double octave?"

Not sure, but it started with the Cat Anderson method, then involved both The Be-Bop Range Book by Eric Bolvin and the strength studies from John Daniel.

At base of the whole thing is a Freudian premise that if I can "own" a double high C, day in and day out, the chicks will go wild.

Was this an original build from the ground up or did some parts come from manufacturers?

(1) What salvaged horns and parts were cobbled together to make this ?

(2) What practical use does it have ? Is it mainly intended for jazz playing ?

(3) How much would it cost to have one put together and would we have to supply the salvaged instruments for parts or do you have some readily available to chop up and solder together ?

(4) What is the cost to make one from scratch ?

No practical use. Thought so. A frankenhorn you can use on the 7th measure of one tune...also, I guess, one you can post in the horns forum against site rules to try and generate business for yourself.

That's awesome!

I think they dig good-looking guys who play smooth stuff, like Chet Baker, Herb Alpert, and Chris Botti...

Anyone who wants to get into the transcriptions that Sergei Nakariakov has recorded in the past decade can use a 4-valve horn. There are many uses like this for the modern player.

You seem to be focused on creating the false impression that posting pictures of trumpets is against forum policy. It isn't.

Are you the same guy that created an account to hound Michael a little while back?
