We all from time to time need a little help when the stage is dark or our eyes have faded through the years.
I recently came across this little wonder that has completely sold me and for that reason I have purchased four units for our Robson Chamber Ensemble.
Some of the outstanding features are as follows-
Rechargeable through the included USB cable
Extended life on each charge
Three levels of brightness
Heavy duty clip for a secure connection to any stand
Very flexible arm for easy positioning
More than enough brightness for any situation
Small enough to fit in any instrument case
And a very reasonable price.
Check it out at…..

I use an Aria rechargeable light. Good prices at Osmun Music. Aria also makes other similar but less expensive lights with power cords.

So my LEPOWER light arrived today. I compared to my Kootek light that has 10 LED lamps. The 14 lamp LEPOWER is indeed about 15-20% brighter and the white lens color does a better job at dispersing the light than the clear on the Kootek. They cost the same on Amazon and the LEPOWER is on sale for $17.99. So thanks for the recommendation. I'm very happy with this. _________________ Schilke 32HD Bb Trumpet

Move to a tablet and you never need a stand light again.

At least these are cheap. Some really negative quirks to them though:
1. The button isn't protected, so if you store it in a bag, it is very easy to have it activate without knowing, and then the battery runs out.
2. Resultant, if you get to your dark gig and need it, then realize it's dead, just plugging it in does not "give you light" It has to charge for 15+ minutes before there is any brightness.
3. The "charging" light on it when it's plugged in is obnoxiously bright blue, and shines "up", so if you're in a pit, there is a little bright spotlight of blue shining up from your stand. I put a little strip of gaff tape over the charge indicator.
4. The battery only lasts about 3hrs on one go, and gets noticeably dimmer by 2hrs - enough so that it's not really functional.
As long as you know about all these quirks - they're actually fine lights. I have 3, they're only $19 bucks (the ones with a warmer kelvin color). Keep one in each car's travel stand bag, along with the extra socks, bow tie, black tie. Cheap light insurance. Put a large binder clip over the button to keep it from being depressed. Order 10-15 feet long micro USB cord so you can actually plug it in like a normal stand light if needed. All said and done, you're what, $24 into a bright LED light for the oh **** situation when you get to another church that doesn't have lights that shine down where you're playing? _________________ Trombahonker's Practice Studio on Youtube |

FWIW I'm still using a Mighty bright Hammerhead. They go days on a set of batteries. If I need more light I just use two. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I used to think that my eyes wouldn't like it as well either, until I tried an iPad pro and ForScore.
I can see *better* on the tablet than with actual paper and any stand light you want to dream up. The contrast is amazing and the backlighting is easier on my eyes than the glare off paper, regardless of what whiteness or finish on the paper stock I use. Plus, the screen resolution is far higher than any laserjet printer I've encountered, and I can crop the PDF borders and stretch it (without any loss of image quality) all the way out to the borders of the display and end up with larger notes than on actual paper.
It's a win, win, but of course, it's more expensive than paper. Other than that, it's *much* easier on the eyes. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

On the contrary, see Randy's post.
I can clean up a chart and fix all kinds of flaws - keystoning, speckles, even rewrite sections with a bit of effort, sharpen edges, and maximize the cropping to the point where things are much larger than they were on the original paper.
I can also turn up the brightness way more than any paper/light combo.
Seriously, if you have aging eyes, iPad with Forscore improves things bigly. I double I would be playing without it. _________________ ~'77 DEG Dynasty II Soprano Bugle in G

I use the Aria music stand light that runs on 120VAC. It's output is adjustable, which makes it very easy on my eyes, and it's built like a tank. _________________ Jim19043

I have the Aria, as well as several multi-light battery-powered ones that I use occasionally. But if it's something where I can do so, I much prefer using my iPad Pro and Forscore.
Regardless of how good the light is (in my opinion, the Aria wins this hands down,) unless the music is perfectly flat, you'll always have shadows and hot spots. A tablet eliminates this problem.
Also, if your eyes are really bad, you can turn it to landscape mode; you'll have to turn twice as often, but you'll surely be able to see the music.

Love my Aria as well. adjustable, long lasting battery, solid.
My only con is that it's heavy.. If you put it, a Jazz Band folder, and anything else on your stand, it will need to be a healthy stand. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

My wife gifted me a big iPad Pro and I immediately loaded it with ForScore. While I haven't been able to test it in a gig I'm pretty sure it's going to win on readability over most any stand light lit paper. The only downside I see is that it's only a single page and there have been times I liked being able to play two or three pages without turning. I know there's the footpedal option but that doesn't allow you to look ahead. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Charles,
There is a setting that allows half-page turns; this may help you some. I use mine for local musical theater and it has been a god-send...
There is also a feature that I have not used yet where you can time page turns.

I made good use of half-page turns when I read a part off of a friend's iPad Mini in landscape mode. Never considered its utility for reading across page turns. Good tip.
Can't fathom how I'd make timed page turns work. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."
