Just wondering if anyone out there has tried shortening a mouthpiece. Right now I'm trying out a "project mouthpiece" from my high school days. It's a Bach 1C bored to a #22 and cut to the length of a Monette C trumpet mouthpiece. It's been turned town on a lathe so that it still gaps correctly in the receiver. It definitely slots the notes better on a C trumpet than a regular length mouthpiece, keeping the fourth space E flat/natural in check and also fixing some of the usual flatness of the upper register. I'm not sure how much of this is attributable to the effective increase in backbore or the shortened length of the mouthpiece a la Monette.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? This mouthpiece plays much better than an off-the-shelf 1C to me.

Since you live in Norther VA, you might know Scotty Holbert, who lives just south of Baltimore. He makes custom mouthpieces and he has gone to the short shank for his pieces for that very reason. If you would like to talk to him about it, shoot me an email and I'll send you his number.
By the way, where in Northern VA? I'm in Odenton, MD. _________________ Patrick Gleason

I'm not familiar with Scotty or his mouthpieces. Does he have a website? Since I'm so close, I would be interested in knowing what he has to offer. My email is in my profile below this message. I live in Great Falls, VA about 15 minutes from the beltway just over the MD border.
