OK so I'm doing some Stamp stuff and I printed off the Boyd Hood MP drills. I'm just curious how you guys fit these into your daily practice. They seem pretty extensive.
Peace and thanks for the help,

Do them all for a while, until you feel like you're really starting to get an idea of what each one has to offer. Then, pick the ones that seem to help YOU the most. _________________ RJM

Boyde would always have me do one particular exercise that suited me the most. I do the same exercise on my alto mp, visualizer and tpt mp. _________________ Kevin |

I do the first one ( sometimes on a bass trumpet mouthpiece), followed by the last one on my regular mouthpiece. Then, straight to the Stamp studies. It has been a great help to me following a heart attack, triple by- pass surgery and complications that kept me hospitalized for several months. I am back in shape now, thanks to Mr. Hood and Mr. Stamp!
This is a great topic, and I look forward to reading what others do.

Kevin,
I haven't heard of using an alto horn mouthpiece as part of a practice routine. Can you tell me a little more about its use and potential benefits?
Thanks,

Matt,
I use a bass trumpet mouthpiece that I got from Parke mouthpieces. I use it to warm up before I use my regular mouthpiece, and I use it to warm down at the end of my playing day. I can't tell you why it works, but it seems to give more resonance to my sound, and just generally makes my chops feel good. The piece is one that John Hagstrom had copied by Parke, and comes with some words of wisdom about its use from Hagstrom.
I have not heard of the alto mouthpiece being used until this topic opened either, and would also like to know more about it.

Boyde got me (and all of his students) to use alto mouthpieces to help solidify things. He got it from Herseth who would use it between shows and rehearsals. I have found that it gets the blood flowing a little more when I use it. _________________ Kevin |

One of the reasons to work with the alto mouthpiece is let it lets flaws in your breathing/setup show through a little more. The smaller mouthpieces and the horn tend to help cover small mistakes. Also, if you sound like hell on the horn, you tend to feel bad, and get down on yourself. If you sound bad with the alto mpc. it's just because you're not used to it, so you fix it - it's much more non-threatening. _________________ RJM

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I think I got an advertisment for the Parke bass trumpet mouthpiece a year or so ago. It has a trumpet shank, correct?
Thanks,

The Parke bass trumpet mouthpiece does have a trumpet shank. When I warm down on it, I just plug it into my Bb. I admit I have been tempted to get a bass trumpet, but so far have resisted!

This is not Stamp related, so forgive me, but I once worked with a high note player that would warm down buzzing a tuba MP on the bus after the gig.
Nobody liked him much.......... |

Perhaps the secret to his high notes! He did this on the bus, and became the first trumpet castrati!
