I second what a number of others have said. Try out some other horns, perhaps after a couple of weeks or a month.
Before that concentrate on easy notes. Start with ones that are comfortable. Play them consistently, long tones, short tones. Listen to yourself and try to make the best sound the horn will give you with those notes. Then move up a half step or step and do the same thing until that note is comfortable.
I would start with whatever note plays most naturally and easily for you and go up and down from there slowly.
After you get a little feel for where you are and where the notes are, you might want to try some other horns.
I also recommend lessons. They can save a lot of time. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS, Yamaha YTR-6335S

I never had the problems you have described when I started playing. I would suspect that your problem is with the pocket trumpet. _________________ I rode in on a horse and can't seem to get out of L.A.

I really appreciated all of the responses, and I wanted to provide an update for you all and for future readers. I got my hands on another full size trumpet as many of you suggested. As a result of this experiment, I discovered that my issue was definitely the unplayable pocket trumpet. I returned it for a full refund! |
