Nobody mentioned Charlie Sepulveda. Charlie came to New York City in the 80's playing with Eddie Palmieri with Juancito Torres. Although Juancito played most of the solo's, Charlie played lead and he was the one that brought Bryan Lynch and Mike Mossman into the latin scene. He'd have gigs with Willie Colon and invite Brian and Charlie used to play their solo battles that he recorded the night before.
I studied with Charlie at City College of New York. There were alot of older jazz musicians going back to school to get their degree's. Drummer Louis Nash was one of them. He already was a 1st call drummer but I guess Ron Carter got him into the program so he could have a piece of paper.
Charlie went on to form his own jazz group, the Turnaround, but never got the recognition that the other latin trumpet players got.
Quite frankly, Eddie's band sounded better with Charlie and Juancito before all the jazz guys came on the scene. Bryan Lynch is a great trumpet player and obviously Conrad Herwig can play his butt off. But the band lost something when Eddie went all latin jazz. Bryan outplays both Charlie and Juancito when it comes to bebop but that's not why I'd go to see Eddie. It was a powerhouse band with Giovanni Hidalgo on conga's. Forget the bonbo player name. But that band was as driving as Santana.
