Bach 7c, Yamahas and Schilkes.
FWIW - as a school kid, I initially played a Bach 7C which didn't bother me because I thought "a mouthpiece is a mouthpiece". I switched to a Schilke H (Herseth, erstwhile Schilke 11) and all was well. Played it in many styles of music from secondary school into college. The Yamahas are based on Schilkes.
The go-to mouthpiece in my area (Austin) is Bach 3C (which I don't necessarily agree with) but it can't be denied that Texas is historically a powerhouse for developing trumpeters. Bach 7C and 3C, Schilke/Yamaha 11 are all larger than a Bach 10 1/2 C, so . . .
And BTW, I think the OP is overmanaging/thinking this. This is an underdeveloped trumpet kid we're talking ab out. He shouldn't harm himself but doesn't need much more than a MOR trumpet mouthpiece from a reputable manufacturer, like a Yamaha 11B4. Hit the Shed and fuggedaboutit. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

My controversial opinion is that mouthpiece size selection does not have a relationship with the size or shape of a students lips or mouth. I don't agree that "bigger lips" or "fleshier lips" should require bigger mouthpieces or vice versa.
Children can play trombone, french horn, tuba, trumpet, whatever. People with small lips can play the tuba. People with big lips can play the trumpet. I believe selecting a mouthpiece is a personal choice and has more to do with the sound you want, the technique you use to play, and the style of music you play than it does have to do anatomy.
I think a child should start on a normal mouthpiece and there is no such thing as a beginner mouthpiece. A 3C would be fine. I personally like it better than the 7C, but I don't think it matters that much. |

I vote for a Bach 10.5C
Easier to play and a better match to a small mouth than a 7C. _________________ 80ties Holton T101 Symphony (Silverplate)

I agree with the recommendation of a 10.5 trumpet mouthpiece. _________________ Jupiter 520 M lacquered Shepherds crook cornet
