Rob (mind if I call you Rob?): They might just not have seen it or had time to respond. If you need a quick(er) response, it'll work better if you make a new thread on the main section. Hope you keep enjoying your time here.

I did find the answer eventually. It doesn't belong here but i don't quite understand why trumpeters have renamed the notes. I have taken semester and a half of theory and we learned the notes and their names oh well. I will continue to post and read posts here guys I was just a little testy yesteday. So thanx for looking that other thread up or me i will read it through and add my arguments or not. There is a lot of info here accessing it isn't so easy though. and sure call me Rob thanx guys. Be "seeing" you.

Oh, so if I can get the G below high C after one week of being back on the horn I'm doin alright right??

Someone once told me that the reason certain people get the good gigs is that they are true professionals. Their sound is great and they pay attention to EVERY note they play! I know of trumpet players that go thru the motions and they get their check. Playing high, IMHO, seems to get more attention because it really leaps out at the listener. When was the last time you heard "wow, listen to that 3rd trumpet player belt out those low G's?". NEVER.

A lead trumpet player in a big band gets more money because he/she dictates style among other things. That's why he/she makes the big money. He/she is partly responsible for the way the band plays. It is much easier to be a follower than a leader. A lot of people would crack under that pressure. The ones who don't, are the ones that get the job.

I will go out on a limb here and say that our "lowly" third trumpet player makes much more $$$ belting out low G's than 99% of the lead players belting out dubbas. Plus, he gets full medical, dental, life and instrument insurance, pension, and at least 10 weeks of paid vacation per year. And he gets to live at home instead of on the road, though when we do go on tour, he gets his own room in a luxury hotel(paid for) + a daily meal allowance. His weekly per diem on said tours is more than the weekly salary of the guys that are on the road with Maynard.

Do not underestimate the value of a great low G.

J

A great, resonant low C is one of the most beautiful notes on the trumpet!!

The reason for my posting the low G thing is because that's what I do here. I play mostly 3rd & 4th parts. I love playing down there in the basement. I said that the screamers get the attention. There is definitely nothing wrong with playing the lower register. In fact, I think that's the reason for my tone having such a definite center to it.

As far as the money, lead players may make more in a night just because so many of them are hired guns. Unfortunately for them, not everybody uses a "gun" every night. So in conclusion, yes the low G gets the steady every night work but the once a week screamer gets the attention.

I'm glad I'm a low G kind of guy.

Jim, don't "diss" your lowely third player! I bet he is an incredible musician, plus a great guy to boot.

Also, I think the 3rd/Assistant position is one of the hardest to do. Not only do you have to have a great low G, you need to keep your "Alpine Symphony" chops in case Don gets sick or something.........

As for the lead players getting the hottest chicks.........

I think the drummer succeeds more on that end.

Why, I don't know. It sure can't be from intellegence........

HM,

I wasn't dissing him at al - Boyd is a good guy. I was parenthetically calling him "lowly" to make a point that those low Gs are worth some serious cash!

I value every spot in the section, believe me, as I have played them all.

I remember a story about a top-call trumpet player in WI who signed a contract to play some tracks. He was known for his upper reg, so the contract called for him to play a high G.

Anyone know who he's talking about? I'm from WI, so I'm curious.

I hear ya, Jim.

Just giving you a hard time.

I remember playing second trumpet on the "Linz" Symphony a few years back.

Talk about very soft and exposed low g's...............

Another one is the opening to Schuman 2.

I think playing ultra-high has become very over-rated. Peoiple go crazy over dubba C's, but if you don't have the rest, it does not matter.

When I first started studying with Manny Laureano way back in 1988, one of the first lessons, I asked him how his high range was (I guess I was naive).

He proceeds to pick up his Monette Bb, with a Monette B1-2 mouthpiece (Bach 1X), and plays the final lick on Doc Severinsen's recording, "A Song For You":

He starts on tuning note C, and gradualy works his way up to the Eb above Dubba C at the end. He holds the piss out of it, louder, longer, and with more sound than you could imagine.

I guess he showed me!

$10 says half the geeks on this site where more interested in what mouthpiece/horn Jim is holding than the babe next to him.

Admit it...
