Hello. I'm still filling in gaps, so the more replies the better!!! Also, please provide full names. I can't really work with all the "me" submissons - I don't know the real name! "Me" will not go on the finished project!!! Also, full names farther up each tree are important. First names, Mr. ..., and "the lady who...." won't work.

Thanks for your help.

Wayne,

I know that you’ve been working on this project for a long time. I think it would be VERY interesting to see where each of the prominent teachers towards that top of the tree taught along with their dates of tenure. This would in essence be the genealogy of a particular institution, which by itself no is small project!

So, for instance, the legs of the tree that led to Jim Thompson, Charles Geyer, Barbara Butler, Sidney Mear, and Pattee Evenson would all point back to Eastman. Juilliard would have Phil Smith, Mark Gould, Ray Mase, Kevin Cobb, William Vacchiano, and Max Schlossberg (and certainly others that I can’t think of right now). New England Conservatory would have Charles Schlueter, etc. The teachers that weren’t officially associated with a school simply wouldn’t be a part of this part of your project.

I know when you’re finished this is going to be a great contribution to the on-line knowledge about trumpet players!

Keep plugging away!

gio trumpeter --

are you taking lessons from Rich Matta? I have a friend here in ATL that studied with him, and he is a MONSTER. His name is Mike Barry.

Wayne, for your records, I believe that Rich Matta was a Claude Gordon student.

yeah! Rich Matta is the best. I love the way he teaches. He was my band director in 8th grade but now I"m going to be a freshman and I'm going to have to move on but I still go to his house so we can play together

Sorry - this is a repeat for all you TPINsters. For the rest:

Someone posted a topic on TPIN asking if there was a diagram, resembling a family tree, of trumpet teachers and pedagogues. Not knowing of such a "trumpet tree," I'm very interested in putting one of my own together. What would help would be for people to post known "lineages." For example, one such lineage of the several I've put together is "Max Schlossberg-> William Vacchiano-> Armando Ghitala."

Please help me out by posting any and all known lineages. These may or may not be your own personal lineages.

Thanks!

William (Bill) Adam (Indiana University, Bloomington) ->
Joe Phelps (Appalachian State University) ->
Ben Belton (me)

William Vacciano (Julliard) ->
William L. Jones (Appalachian State University) ->
Ben Belton (me)

Lots of Williams in there, maybe I should change my name...

There are a lot of twists in some of this. For instance I was told that Laurie Frink studied with Dennis Schneider when she was in Nebraska.(Pat Harbison can you comment) Dennis studied with Bill Adam at IU. Don Jacoby also studied with Adam a bit. Adam saw over 250 different trumpet students last year. That is a tree in itself.

The Adam/Schneider/Frink connection is accurate.
Frank Brown also studied with Adam and through him there are lots of Cincinnati connections.
Then there is the Adam connection to Bill Platt and through Platt you find a lot of influence in European circles.

Sorry about that. Here is mine redone.

Benny Baker>>>>(Ernest Williams then Benny Baker)>>>>Ralph Scafiddi>>>>Roger Wood (Me)

Herbert. L. Clarke and Louis Maggio >>>> Claude Gordon >>>> Roger Wood (Me)

Max Schlossberg>>>>Jimmy Stamp>>>>(Bob Anthony and then Jimmy Stamp)>>>>Roger Wood (Me)

Kind of crazy to read. Ralph studied first with Ernest Williams then with Benny Baker. I then studied with Ralph. The last entry, I first studied with Bob Anthony (who studied with Jimmy), then I studied with Jimmy. Hope that makes sense for your tree. Would love to see the tree when you are finished.

See ya, Rog

Make sure to list as one of H.L. Clarke's Students Fay Hanson. She was an important pedagogue of her day.

Thanks!

Charles Schlueter

All roads seem to go back to Vacchiano, and thereby to Schlossberg. Is there anyone out there that these guys haven't taught?

I want to take a few lessons with Chase. He seems like a great teacher. Could you PM with details about cost, lesson lengths and such?

Anyways, here's my tree...

Ray Podhornik -> Nicolai Koegler -> Me
