Exactly.

And the TH posting guidelines at
http://www.trumpetherald.com/usage.php
expressly forbid posting such personal attacks against
Kirk or against any other member of TH.

But many hateful people continue posting personal attacks
anyway and the moderators don't do a thing to stop it.

So I have reconsidered my intention to take a 2 week
vacation from TH.

I have decided to leave TH permanently.

If you hang around a bar which has a lot of skinheads,
then people will start to think that you might be a skinhead, too.

If you tend to hang around a bar which has a lot of communists,
then people will start to think that you might be a communist, too.

The principle is known as "You are known by the company you keep."

I am not going to keep company with hateful people who delight in posting daily personal attacks against Kirk or against anyone else,
and moderators whose apathy allows such hatefulness to appear here so frequently.

So I am out of here for good.

Moshe, Morris, Conn6B, etc...

I know of at least several moderators who spend a disproportionate amount of their home time cleaning up threads, chasing down anonymous troublemakers, removing inappropriate posts, and blocking all varieties of spam. Why? So that members of this community might have a more worthwhile experience when they visit... and they do it for no money and no recognition... They do it because it needs to be done.

Do they act on everything to everybody's satisfaction? Of course not. That's impossible. Even if they read every thread, and fully understood the intentions and the frame of mind of all potential participants, it still wouldn't be good enough for some people. That's just life.

So, rather than post about how offended you are, you could help out by dropping the moderators a PM... WITH THE URL OF THE OFFENDING POST... so it can be examined and addressed without trying to figure out where it is and why it's bothering you. This would be a good time to 'soldier up' and pull on the big girl pants. Choose to help out instead of simply complain about how hateful we apathetic skinhead communist neanderthals really are.

No, not everybody behaves themselves online. Couple that with the fact that each reader has a different level of tolerance for the behavior of others. I think it works pretty well here most of the time. If you would like to see examples of boards that really struggle with this, go visit some college football message boards.... especially after unexpected losses. You will see the full range from snobs to babies to real jerks to self-appointed (or annointed) experts in their (and everybody else's) field. Do we have some of these too? Sure. Annoying? Of course. Welcome to the online world.

So often, people get offended ON BEHALF OF OTHERS quite unnecessarily. If I post to a thread and a handful of people tell me they don't like what I have to say, that's pretty normal. But if several dozen folks get upset, maybe it is something I am doing wrong, and I need to be less _____ (arrogant/know-it-all/disrespectful/opinionated/dismissive/patronizing, etc...). Maybe after one is told this repeatedly over the course of a year, and they choose to continue posting the way they always have, perhaps they are (a) not bothered by the responses, or (b)not paying any attention to the responses. We all have capacity to continue learning, and natural consequences of our actions are often our very best teachers.

So what if I see things that I don't like online? If you don't agree with what somebody says on the forum to you or to anybody else, you have several choices. Responding and getting offended are only two of them. The internet is like an old radio. One dial changes the station, and the other one turns it off. So chill out. Do something else. Cool your jets. Go practice. Learn to ignore.

It sure beats going through life offended at everything...

I never quite understood the point of message board and Internet hostility. But I guess it is the result from the mix of insecure individuals and anonymity the Internet can provide....

I seem to be part of the community of "skinhead communist neanderthals" for my post stating I couldn't get past the spelling errors in one of the capn's posts.

It is often hard to understand the cap'n's posts even when the spelling is accurate. When the spelling is bad I find I just don't enjoy reading the posts, and that is why I am here, for reading enjoyment.

Frankly I think the cap'n gets a lot of grief, perhaps more than he should.

But I find the self righteous posts from certain parties just as annoying as the cap'n's.

Me Too!!

But you got to admire a guy like him. He gets so much grief and ridicule yet he takes it all in stride and never says a harsh word, at least not that I have read, about anyone. I try and read most of his stuff but it gets pretty long winded.

As this is a dispute resolution forum, I'll be a bit more direct than I was on the "Horns" forum: so leave already. The "two week vacation" lasted about a day, and big surprise, here you are saying (threatening?) goodbye again. Personally, I would not want the moderators' job, and while I occasionally feel that they miss the mark, who doesn't?

I agree that the captain gets a lot of grief, but still feel that he brings 85% of it upon himself. This is not a case of a poor, innocent, even tempered eccentric being picked upon because he's a bit different, it's a case of people (myself included) occasionally becoming fed up with his constant ramblings. Which is not to say that he does make the occasional valid observation, he certainly does. But they are generally offset by his MANY inaccurate and sometimes offensive remarks. But as that apathetic, evil moderator stated above, we all other choices, we can ignore it or go do something else. And I have to say that I find your self-righteousness and I'm-taking-my-ball-and-going-home attitude FAR more annoying than anything C.K. says.

So, to repeat myself: leave already, and keep your promise this time, please.
