Fritz Reiner - Chicago Symphony Orchestra. One of my all time favorite Herseth recordings. A must have for your collection!

I second that- the Song of The Nightingale on the same disc isn't too shabby either.

NYPhil with Yuri T. is also very, very good. |

YOu have to check out the recording with BSO and Ozawa. IT's Ghitalla playing lead. The violin solos are some of the best I've ever heard! The piece just had the right flow for me on this recording. |

Yes, Joe Silverstein is probably the best concertmaster any American orchestra has ever had! And Ghitalla sounds great, too.
I like the brass on the Temirkanov, but the winds ruin it for me.
Another great one to check out is Rodzinski and the Cleveland Orchestra featuring Louis Davidson on trumpet.

I was always partial to the version that Maynard Ferguson did. _________________ Best Regards, Play Well!! |

Another favorite is the Concertgebouw Orchestra led by Kirill Kondrashin from 1979. Does anyone know if Peter Masseurs is playing on this one? Whoever it is sounds great.

I vote for the Reiner/ CSO Recording. That brass section is stunning, and Herseth couldn't have played that part better. Also Jacobs-my God, what a sound! I remember the first time I heard the CSO Live. When Jacobs played for the first time I literally jumped; I couldn't believe the huge rich sound that man got. I've never heard any other tuba player sound like that. And that was when Philip Smith was playing 4th trumpet. WOW! |

reiner & mackerras are what i have...beecham on emi is supposed to be the 'overall' favaorite of most folks..
rgale-i think reiner's tenure predated smith's membership..that conductor's been dead about 40 years..
