As of now, TH has become a megaphone of a single user who has positively ruined the experience of the website.

I wonder would the Mods have anything against the following question:

The poll runs for one week, starting on December 28th, 2010.

I speak about niche things. Most people aren't interested. I'm ok with that.

Disinformation bothers me.

Seriously considering it. The mods/system admin, etc., have given the impression of not caring if one single lunatic has his way with this list. That's unfortunate. Also, they've never given any input in the threads in Comments and Suggestions about the possibility of bringing back the ignore function. I thought by now we could have at least been given some information from whoever it is that runs TH if it's possible to bring back the ignore function. Or as it's been suggested, giving the original poster of a thread the ability to delete any particular thread they've started.

In the land of TPIN and TM, trolls wouldn't have been able to get to the level they have here. Now before people start saying, "Well, go over there, if you don't like it here." I do happen to like it here. Better, actually. TPIN's a great place but with the layout and design of TH, it's so much easier to get right to the topics that interest me. Also, I prefer TH over TM mostly because I started posting here first and this is the site I like to frequent.

You would have to ask the admin, but I think the current software TH is using does not allow for an ignore function. Therefore, without completely overhauling the site it probably isn't an option.

Todd could give the definitive answer, or a tech geek like Steve maybe...

I hope that nobody leaves TH over such a silly and mundane issue. It's a wonderful site filled with (mostly) wonderful posts.

Best wishes,

The single user wouldn't be such a huge presence on TH if people didn't help make him a big deal by constantly creating threads about him and responding to every one of his long posts whether there is anything worth responding to or not. He's been around for quite a while. He wasn't a big presence until people gave him their seemingly undivided attention.

People have been hammering at him for about a month now. He's even more prominent now than he was before because of it.

True. I don't have a good response to this. Correcting misinformation seems to have no effect. He seems not to be interested in educating himself, only perpetuating his presence.

I feel that ignoring him is the best option, with or without an "ignore" button, but that requires almost everyone to ignore him - which seems unlikely to happen.

Sadly, I'm betting that TH will be in the same place in a month or two from now. That's my bet, not my wish.

I'm not leaving, though.

...and that's hopefully the last time post I'll about this user.

Happy Holidays.

This is correct: Todd can give the definitive answer.

That said, my understanding is that the good people who provide the phpBB software removed the "Block User" function with the version of the software that is currently running and have not restored it in subsequent releases. This means that someone would have to do some coding to restore that functionality; since I don't do that kind of thing, I haven't a clue about how easy or hard it would be to add back the user block functionality to the forum.

As I have mentioned a few times, there's a Firefox script you can download from here. I've tried it and encountered no problems. This even blocks at least some of the material quoted from blocked users. I think you'll have to install Greasemonkey first.

If you're not running Firefox, I don't know what other options are available.

I like the freaks. Bring em on. They say the most outlandish, unjustified statements. Who needs Gerry Springer when you can tune into trumpetherald.com. The problem is that some of you take them seroiusly. I mean, what's a circus without a bearded lady.

Exactly. Those who think Capt.Kirk is a troll should stop feeding him.

In the past five days there have been many, many more posts about that single user than he has actually made himself.

I am no fan of the poster being discussed here, but leaving because of him would just be letting him win.

The good thing about suspect X is that everyone with any commonsense can see his advice is questionable to say the least. 99% of people would take it with a grain of salt. I am more worried about the people who appear credible and give dodgy advice.

There has always been a certain laissez faire approach from the admin here. It was only after the "Zeus wars" that resulted in TM being created and many good posters leaving that the anonymous global moderators were created. I still pick up good info here, but the mega posts by a few indviduals, as well as the pity one-liners that never answer the OP's question, make reading pretty hard somtimes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the best forum I'm a member of is HEAVILY moderated by PUBLIC moderators. That board features quality posts from people that actually know inside info about the topic. TH could be like that if the reigns on EVERYBODY were tightened up and the pros weren't subjected to ridicule by the posters here and by their colleagues (for even posting here).

You need a "considering it" button for your poll.
