Hickman has a book "100 Progressive Lessons for Trumpet for the Beginning or Comeback Player"
That's me! ~12 solid years on, and ~25 years off
Has anyone tried this book? How is it? I'm not really ready to dive back into Arban at this stage, my muscle memory for fingering is still mostly there but my range sucks eggs and I can barely squeak out a top-staff G. |

Yes, I've got one and have been using it.
I think one of it's strong points is that it progresses range-wise a little slower than other books. For me a weak point is that some exercises call for more awkward fingering.
Depending on your range, I found the series by Harold Mitchell to be excellent, pedagogically, and balanced in the categories of exercises.
For your perspective, I have also tried a group of exercises in several books, as well as the Rubank Method. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Thanks. That's a good enough recommendation for me! |

An excellent book.. Includes many of the top etudes and exercises from various sources.. Clarke, Concone, etc
This book, a couple appropriate solos, and another like Phil Snedecor's Lyrical Etudes and you'll be golden. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

It's very good. Each lesson has a few etudes/studies, a musical piece, and a technical study. It progresses slowly enough to avoid a major pitfall for comeback players: trying to play music that's too difficult too soon—yet it moves along well enough to build a solid foundation and see results.

I agree with the other responses. This a great resource and it does a very good job of presenting lessons where each is just a little more challenging than the last. _________________ Kevin Hilman |

I agree to the above posts. Great book to use with comeback or beginners. Nice to use in addition to other supplements. Book is well paced - I just wish that the marked in fingerings would disapear sooner so that the younger players get the valve combinations memorized. Love the book - use it currently with my own young trumpeter! |
