|
|
The question of dating a Yamaha Trumpet, Cornet or Flugel via its serial number keeps raising its head. Unfortunately Yamaha seems to have allocated serial numbers in a completely random fashion and also seem to be quite tight lipped with regard to sharing the equation to work out their serials.
The only way of working out an approximate date is knowing the particular model's production dates (listed in my complete model list thread) or the original purchaser.
OR
the very first Yamaha Trumpet, the YTR-1, used the year it was built in as the first 2 digits of the serial, ie; 66xxxx. It only holds true for this particular year.
I am attempting to collect a large enough sample of serial numbers to find a pattern that they may have used. Please submit your Yamaha serial number and help me work this out.
Yamaha - SERIAL NUMBER - Submission Form
All the collected serials can be viewed here;
Yamaha - SERIAL NUMBER - Spreadsheet
I am not collecting any personal details so don't fear.
Cheers

Interesting to see the first 7 digit serial number submitted.
Does this mean that Yamaha has now produced over 1,000,000 Trumpets, Cornets and Flugels? |

There have been at least 3 serial numbers beginning with "C" in the format "C xxxxx".
I would be fantastic if the owner of one of these instruments beginning with C could email me a pic or 2 of their serial number.

Now even more confusing.
I now have listed on the spreadsheet of serial numbers the following combinations.
4 digits
5 digits
6 digits
7 digits
"C" with 5 digits
"T" with 5 digits
This is going to get messy.
Photos of each of the serial combinations would be great. Anyone?
Cheers

Keep it going. This has been a long time vexing subjest. Glad to see that someone is up to doing the research.
I am sorry that I can't help you out. I don't own any Yamahas. I'll check around. _________________ Either is fine. My chops always feel great

Neat work. Note that christine who made the Conn loyalist website accepts financial donations. Hers is a splendid example of hard and patient work done right! Are you planning to make your list a business or perhaps not-for-profit? _________________ kochaavim, csillaagkep, αστερρισμός, konnstelacji, connstellation... ...a.k.a. the 28A!

At the moment I have no intent of making this a profit type setup at all. I would like to take it to its own website but quite frankly I don't have the web / DB skills to do what I want nor the funds to invest in it. Basically I'm doing what I'm doing for fun and to fill in the down time I have at work. The other issue is how much Yamaha would like me treading on their feet, so to speak. I would like to cox more info from them to get a much better idea about all of this, but I imagine that the day they release this serial number info they will have their own glossy website controlling it all.
Cheers
