What are the best recordings of Bud and where can I get 'em? Searching "Herseth" on Amazon has not been too productive. Is that because he hasn't recorded much solos stuff?

Thanks,
NM

*Sorry just read the part about solo stuff, there isn't much.

There is a recording of him playing the Haydn available:

http://www.amazon.com/Chicago-Principal-Soloist-Famous-Concertos/dp/B00008RV2S/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1326491455&sr=1-1

There are other collections like this, one contains the Hummel, one the Telemann, one has the Vivaldi double trumpet concerto. However they are all out of print and very hard to track down.

He was asked once about why he didn't record much solo literature, and I believe his response was something along the lines of none of the solo literature ever fulfilled him musically like playing a Mahler symphony, so he didn't care as much for it.

Search here on trumpet herald for CSO recordings, there are many threads. And Bud is playing on almost their whole catalog.

A few of my favorites:

Shostakovich 7/Bernstein - some of the loudest brass playing ever recorded
Pictures at an Exhibition/Giulini
Mahler 7/Abbado

Yeah - there aren't a lot of solo Herseth recordings.

Obviously, you've got many decades of choices as far as orchestral recordings.

Try this one for Herseth playing the Haydn.

The Chicago Principal: First Chair Soloist Play Famous Concertos

you also get Jacobs, Clevenger, and several other exceptional solo performances (yes, even the strings and woodwinds). It's available from the CSO Shop or from Amazon.

Check out the Asbury Brass CD, he plays on the Bohme Sextet and a couple of others. The entire CD is very good.

Hey, thanks for the recommendations.

I wanted to clear up... I am interested in any Herseth recordings, not just solo literature. In my first post, I was just speculating that I was having trouble finding stuff because he doesn't record under his own name.

So, let me know about anything with Herseth that you like and would recommend!

Why wouldn't somebody write something for him, or why didn't he commission something? Are the only good composers dead ones?

Husa Concerto was premiered by him, not sure if it was written for him.
