Does anyone know a good recording of this piece. I have one, and it is horrible. The trumpets are badly out of tune. It doesn't seem to be a widely known piece, even though it is phenomenal. I wish Strauss had written more stuff like this for brass and tympani, because he was REALLY good at it.
Also, I am looking to play it. I can't find the music anywhere. I have checked all of the internet resources, and the music dealers I have talked to can't find it anywhere in their books. Even just a publisher name would help greatly.
P.S. if anyone wants to hear it, I can e-mail you the sound file. By the sounds of it, it has to be amateur, so I won't be breaking copyright laws or anything(like that stops some of you, lol) you can still get an idea of it. |

It is on a Vienna Philharmonic recording along with the Alpine Symphony. I believe Ozawa is conducting.

Yeah, where though. That Vienna recording hasn't come up in any catalogues at recording specialty stores or at online resources like cdnow. |

There is also a recording of all the Strauss brass music by the Locke Brass Consort on Chandos. |

The recording I have is by the Locke Consort and it's ok but there are problems--for instance, the horn fluffs the high note near the end. The Ozawa/Boston one is probably better I would imagine! |

It's Ozawa/Vienna. Not Boston. I have a copy of that disc somewhere, but I don't remember where I got it. I will look up the particulars though and will post back tommorow.

Yes, the Locke Consort recording is not without blemishes. It sounds like a bunch of very good players (which it is -- many of the UK's finest) recording with little or no rehearsal, and little or no editing. |

As promised, here are the particulars. The Vienna/Ozawa recording is on the Philips Classical label and is numbered 454 448-2. It was recorded in 1996 so it should still be available somewhere.
Hope this helps.

ps the Feierlicher Einzug is also on this disc. Everything is excellently played. _________________ A word to the wise isn't necessary -- it's the stupid ones that need the advice. |

The Summit Brass will be releasing a live version of the VPF on their upcoming record "Summit Brass - LIVE!". It should be released in mid-October.
