Anybody ever had experience with one of these?
Or something similar?
Looks (both aesthetics and dimensions/ingredients) amazing! I'd love to learn more about how these beauties sound and play. I'm guessing somebody got an awesome horn for about 1/3 the value... _________________ "Stomvi" PhrankenPhlugel w/ Blessing copper bell

Use the search button and you'll find a lot of info.
Great horn, and great name (different company but great dudes!).

Yeah, I've seen plenty on TH about the Austin winds horns, but have not seen anything specifically about large bore light-weight bronze bell model.
Sounds like the kind of horn I really need to try (they don't float through Montana too often...)
Was hoping to solicit some input on those specific parameters. _________________ "Stomvi" PhrankenPhlugel w/ Blessing copper bell

I've played a few Kanstul horns. The ZKT 1600 made for WB was my last horn I owned. They are awesome horns all of them. Each has it's own unique qualities depending on the model. As for Austin Wind intruments, not very familialr with them much less having ever played one. The Kanstul factory is just up to street from my job so I've taken a few trips out there and play tested quite a few horns. Awesome people there too. _________________ AC |

Last I knew the Austin Winds brand was made by Kanstul from Kanstul-made parts at the Kanstul factory. As you can see from my signature, I am a Kanstul believer. But drawing a comparison with Kanstul braded models (or any model for that matter) is somewhat problematic.
The Austin Winds' have a .470 bore - and reversed lead pipe - but do not play as open as that alone might suggest. I have only played on an Austin Winds briefly - but that was a few years ago.
There are only two Kanstul models standard with a reversed lead pipe - the 900 and the X model (both .460 bores) and only one model with a .470 bore - the 1070 (think 'Besson Meha' or 'CG Benge').
AFAIK, No Kanstul branded instrument is comparable to the Austin Winds model(s). _________________ Bill Blackwell

there's a guy in the trumpet studio here that has one, copper bell, it is a great horn. great sound, as said before not as open as a 470 bore would indicate. it would be well worth a try. im poor other wise i would have one. |

Not to cause any conflict here, but, the horn looks like a Zeus Olympus or ZTR 1000. Minimum bracing, heavy bottom caps, reversed tuning slide, valve block more centered; and .470 bore. That said, it looks like it would play very similar to the Olympus, which I like, but my opinion and a "buck" might get me a cup of coffee, somewhere.
Likewise, I love the Kanstul built horns. _________________ Flip Oakes Wild Thing

I've had both (of course) and the AW's horn was far better for me than the Olympus. I think the weight and mouthpipe were much different on both horns. _________________ http://austincustombrass.biz

I think the 900 is a Small 437 bore, not 460. _________________ ------------------------

You're thinking the 991, I believe, which is a .437 bore. The 900 is a Custom Class ML bore trumpet.
