My old iMac (RIP) had one built in. This rig does not, & I don't own one.
So, weigh in. Which one should this hack buy to make Skype lessons etc a happy thing. _________________ 1972 Selmer Radial |

I really like this webcam: http://amzn.com/B0042X8NT6
It's capable of full-HD (1080p), which is unheard-of for a webcam.
This is its main competitor: http://amzn.com/B003M2YT96
As far as microphones go, I often use the mics on my Zoom H4n. If you don't do a lot of playing in your lessons, this is the best vocal mic there is:

I use a Microsoft Lifecam HD with a built in mic. Both work brilliantly with Skype, when I talk to the USA every week. _________________ "Nearly as good as I need to be. Not nearly as good as I want to be".

The Microsoft Lifecam has a built in mike, you won't need to buy a separate one. _________________ "Nearly as good as I need to be. Not nearly as good as I want to be".

Rapier,
TY for answering previous questions. My only previous experience with a computer camera/microphone and playing trumpet was my old iMac that died.
Just received the little Lifecam. Have turned down the volume lots (to #8 out of 100), and still it tends to distort. Yes, backing away brings some advantages, and the timbre captured is not bad. However, there's an annoying "pop" or something sorta like that when the microphone begins to catch a signal.
I want the the thing to post some vids & for taking Skype lessons maybe. Any advice on how to eliminate the "sorta pop" sound? _________________ 1972 Selmer Radial |

I teach Skype lessons. I have a Logitech 9000 webcam. You wnat a web cam with auto focus. I use a logitech stand alone mic for $30.00. None of the built in mics like trumpets. _________________ Bob Grier

Robert,
Your $30 mic reproduces sound well enough? No popping, hissing, grossness, etc when you play? _________________ 1972 Selmer Radial |

yes, it's quite good and USB ready. You just plug it in and play. I learned about it because one of my students had one and he sounded good on it. It's the only stand alone mic Logitech offers on it's web site. All the built in mics just sounded horrible with the trumpet. _________________ Bob Grier

I'll toss in a vote for the Samson USB condenser mic (mine is a C01U, although there may be a new version by now).
It works very well with both a Mac and a PC, and has fantastic sound for voice. I have not used it for musical recording, but it gives you a nice clear "radio announcer" quality voice for skype or ichat, etc. I think some people use them for audio podcasts as well. It might work decently well for trumpet as well, at least better than the typical built-in microphone, but you'd probably have to experiment with distances and such to get an ideal match.
Unlike most condenser mics, you don't have to have a special board to plug it in, or supply wall-wart power, it runs off just the USB line from your computer. I also sprung for a short desktop stand for it, so it's permanently in place and up out of the way. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

TY Randy, Bob, & Rapier, & any I missed.
Ugh. I'd forgotten the joys of PC ownership
Hope it's sorted out. I've turned off the Lifecam mic, & was able to record, albeit poorly, with my headphone mic.
So, I'm expecting the Logitech will work fine. Ty, again Bob.
After viewing "fixes" at the Microsoft Support site, stuff is what it is.
I miss my iMac. _________________ 1972 Selmer Radial |
