If I'm playing on a heavier trumpet, am I better off using a heavier mpc, or will the standard mpc do?

I think so. On my Callet Jazz I use a Callet accoustic weight but on the Superchops I use a heavy weight. The bell on the SC is a bit heavier than the Jazz.
When I tried i regular mp on a Taylor it just didnt work- horn was way too stuffy.

I think that the mouthpiece weight is less critical with a high mass horn vs. a light weight horn. With my Yamaha Z, I really notice a difference using a medium-mass GR. On the other hand, with a heavy weight Yamaha or Lawler, I can't really detect a difference. Also, I think the differences mostly manifest themselves at and above high-C.

So, if you're playing a high mass horn and not playing much above high-C, then I don't think that mouthpiece mass is a particularly important parameter. Still, as in all these things, if you could compare for yourself, then do what your ears and lips tell you. That's always the final test. If you perceive it, then it's real. (Don't worry about physics, etc., just trust your ears).

Best regards,

Dave
