Gordon, interesting statement. While I like my 43 trumpet very much, I don’t like the 37 at all, at least with the stock leadpipe. It is way too stuffy for me and the sound is different in a way I don’t like either.
Why is it that you have such a clear opinion about the 25 vs. 37 cornet? _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

If ur speaking about me ur assumption is all wrong!!! I've been playing trumpet professionally for over 50 years and cornet for over 30. I think by now I'm pretty much aware of the differences in approach/air etc. That Bach cornet was simply a VERY bad horn.

I have played both.
The 37 was a disappointment after the 25.
The 25 was more open and had a broader sound. _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced

I own a rare (as far as I can tell) Bach 31 medium bore cornet. Has a 175xxx serial number but a corp. bell with a heavy stamping as it goes straight through the silver and shows the brass underneath the plating. Really cool, but finicky, horn. Varies a lot with mouthpiece. I have had best results playing it with a Wick 3 mouthpiece. Does not feel small in blow but does not respond well up high, though I really only play it with a mouthpiece the size and contour of a toilet bowl so that kinda expected.
I was playing a Getzen eterna LB (800 model?) before this horn and the strad played absolute circles around the eterna, though it could have been a dog of an eterna.
I used the horn in college to play some Clarke and Arban solos and some brass quintet literature. It worked well for that, though I was gassed as all heck the semester I played Arban's version of Venice and the end was a real struggle.
It is more pitchy than my regular strad 37 trumpet and I need to practice on it before I just take it to a performance but it has a great sound and is super responsive. _________________ Bach 37 |

The thing about Bach cornets is that there can be a lot of variation. I currently have four 'long model' Bachs. A '38 with a 7 bell, New York 67 with a 111 bell, a Mt. Vernon with a 25 bell, and an early Elkhart with a 37 bell. Each one is different both in feel and sound. I've also owned a New York 37, a modern 37 and a 70's 25 and those were different too. Mouthpipes matter as well, one of my horns has a 112 pipe, the others have 106 pipes. The venturi size also differs from horn to horn. Two of my horns have lightweight brass bells (one has a star, one does not) and one has bronze valve balusters instead of nickel. Two have a side seam bell -- the Mt. Vernon and the early Elkhart, and two don't. I have measured the venturis on these horns and found each one was different.
I have at different times used each exclusively on gigs for months at a time and consider them all to be great horns. After playing my 25 for a few months, I tried the 37 and found it felt pretty stuffy. My point is that in my experience it is really difficult to speak in general terms about this model horn. _________________ Besson MEHA

The "67" is just the postal code for New York (at that time) that was stamped on Bach Trumpets of a certain time period. It's not a trumpet model or designation. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

I know about the 67 not being a model number. Thanks! _________________ Besson MEHA

And - tadaaa - just now there is a model 25 long cornet on German eBay. So they DO make them with all sorts of bells. TH info confirmed _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence
