I think I can add to the confusion (yippee!).
Around '75 or '76 bought a 7D top that looked like Brian's example of the newer tops. Along with the top I got a #1 and a #2 backbore. The backbores both looked like Brian's examples of the old ones (no ridge or collar near the top and the number stamped in the same place as the older example). Everything fit everything just fine.
I'd post pictures but I sold them a few years ago after carting them all over the country for 3 decades.

I messed that up. The old backbores fit on the new tops. I have some that do.
Something doesn't fit on something with out adjusting the threads. It must be that the new backbores don't fit on the old tops. I have so many Tottles but I can't remember right now if I have any old tops.
I'll figure it out. _________________ Either is fine. My chops always feel great

Wanted to revive this topic out of curiosity:
I have been using a DIORIO G backbore for many years now and never thought to ask, what does the "G" stand for? Are there still DIORIO backbores around to purchase?
It would be cool to get one that is in better condition. |

I've been playing on a Diorio G backbore for a few months. Apparently, the G stands for "Ghitalla". This is something I've read, and the guy who sold it to me told me that it was copied from Tottle's backbore that Ghitalla played. I had always heard that he played a Tottle "K" backbore, so I'm not entirely sure that my info is accurate. In the grand scheme of Diorio backbores, A is the tightest and I believe that K is the largest/most open. |

Are you able to make tops or backbores with the DiOrio threads? |

To Derekthor,
I can assure you Ghitalla played a K backbore on his Tottle.
I studied with him his last 2 years in the orchestra, had seen it up close and personal, and played with him in the section with him using it. Mouthpieces have been my (hopefully healthy) obsession for the last 40 years, and if he ever did use a G backbore , it was after he went to Michigan. I own both, the K is the largest , most definitely! I had bought the G, from Tottle's nephew, Bill Mazacha (spelling???) . IF I recall correctly, (I mean it's been 40 years...), it was a new backbore at the time. Never heard it was named after, or was what Ghitalla used.
Hope this helps...
Bob

Not interested in doing it (those threads are far less efficient than the ones we use).

T,
Would you be able to create a one-piece out of my current setup? A Greg Black 1 1/4 C 24 Throat top with a DiOrio "G" backbore.

Are these on the ACB site? What else do you have as "custom orders?" |

For anyone interested in having cups or backbores customized with or for Tottle threads we can do this for you. In addition to Tottle we can also cut Warbuton, Bach, Reeves, Giardinelli/Stork threads. These are loaded in our files to drive either of our two onsite CNC turning centers. No extra charge, one flat rate, same day service available. http://www.osmun.com/mpcmod
I hope this is helpful. _________________ James Becker

More Tottle questions:
I just purchased a Tottle 3C* two-piece mouthpiece with an unmarked backbore. Is there anyway of finding out if it could be the 'K' that everyone mentions above?
Also, I was curious, what is the 'O' backbore? There's one on Ebay. |

The K backbore has a clearly engraved "K," so yours probably isn't. Coincidentally the Tottle parts that I have are: 3* top, 2 "K" backbores, and a "O" backbore. I also have a reproduction "P" backbore from Osmun. Give them a call. They make gorgeous mouthpieces!
The "K" is a large, "warm" sounding backbore. Buy the "O" if you get the opportunity. I don't think that you'll be disappointed.
I tried emailing Bob Osmun, since he apprenticed with Bill Tottle. I was hoping to get some information about what these backbores are and what their designations actually meant, but I never heard back from him. |

Thanks for weighing-in. I took a shot and bought the 'O' backbore. I can't wait to see how it sounds. I already love the 3C* and it feels like an old DiOrio I played for years. Better, in fact.
Very interested in knowing what the 'O' actually signifies. |

I'm on a DiOrio quest for knowledge... I have a DiOrio 40*C top with a DG8 bottom. I'm currently waiting for a response from Osmun about it, but can y'all shed any light on this apparent Franken'piece I have?? _________________ All the Best,
