|

I am looking for a flugelhorn for college. I've been looking at the lower end horns. But my local music shop has one that they will be getting in from a trade offer. All that he knows now is its a conn professional flugel. Does anyone have any experience with conn flugels? Are they Decent? Sound? Quality? Reviews are welcome. What is the normal used price range for Conn flugels?
Thanks,

Conn Vintage I is a very highly regarded flugel.

Yes, Conn makes good flugels. I'd be happy with one of them, but since all horns are a bit different, play test before buying if at all possible. |

Always a good idea to play a horn before buying, but the Conn Vintage One is an excellent flugel. I love mine!

There are also older Conn flugels out there that were made for Conn by Willson in Switzerland. I have played one, and it is a nice horn. No third slide trigger, but really well made and a good basic flugel. _________________ Richard Hastings

I A/B'd the V1 and the Kanstul 1525 for several sessions at more than one brass shop (ie, played more than one example of each). I also discussed the two horns with several owners of one or the other. My conclusion, supported by the discussions, is that the V1 is by far the more versitile instrument and does everything very well. I bought the 1525 because it does one thing better than the V1 and that was the thing for which I wanted flugel -- dark, unfocused, low, smokey club sound. The V1 would be my choice for any other application. (I use my DQ copper belled Conn 80A played with a flugel-like Curry mouthpiece for situations where flugel with projection, a bit of brightness or fast movement around the horn may be needed.)

I play a Kanstul Burbank flugel. If I were shopping today for another flugel, I'd probably go with the Conn V1 or look for a vintage Besson or Selmer. |

I have a Conn Vintage one that I bought in NYC at Rayburn across fr Lincoln CTR. It has a nice sound and plays well, but the quality of the plating in the valves and slides is less than desirable. I wanted to buy a bobby shew model , by Yamaha but I settled for the conn instead, I like it, but in hindsight I would definitely buy the Yamaha
