Many years ago I sold my 1967/68 Bach 72 - which i regret
so I bought a Yamaha AD200 - It plays nice and open
Wish I had more money to buy professional model...

Now i am back playing for myself using all of the old books I have
from the late 60's and earyly 70's
Originally studied with Charles Yugl - he taught at Willamette University
salem oregon - then in 1972 my sr yr in high school I studied with
Fred Sautter for a few years. Played at MHCC 1974-75 jazz band
Those cats could play - the lead trumpet player sounded like Maynard
But I played 4th chair - but played 1st in band and orchestra
When I played with Fred he was always looking at my horn bending the metal I got such a nice tone out of that horn

Anyway i got married never played much after that....
Now 35 years later I am playing again and enjoying it so much
I am trying to practice 30+ minutes a day and loving it.

I found this forum - I wish I had this in my early days good stuff.

Welcome to the party. Thanks for the introduction!

Off for 25 years myself... nothing since high school. Then my brother, who also played, and I attended a 4th of July big band concert. Back home, I said, "Man, I miss that... wonder what it would take to get back into it?"

Have now enjoyed several years of church and other public playing as well as amusing myself.

Looking forward to hearing about your journey.

I have a story about Maynard
When I was 15 1968 I was visiting my Dad in Los Angeles
we went to long beach for the day
There was a bar called Donte's I think
I heard this band and the trumpets were fantastic
I asked my dad if we could go hear them
The bar let me in so I could see them
It was Maynard with a small group
He signed my napkin
They were only 15 feet from where we were sittting - at the bar
My eyes were wide open the whole time....

Isn't it amazing how a singular experience like that can stay with you for your entire life? As a high school freshman I was able to hear the Buddy Rich Big Band live with several of my "band geek" friends. South Georgia College, Douglas GA. How they came to stop and put on a show there is still mind-numbing to me... the gymnasium was packed with band kids from across the area. My drummer friend surreptitiously made a cassette recording and we wore that thing out, re-living the evening.

Welcome back!

The usual advice: find a good teacher. Best thing I did. Worst was to waste six months on my own rediscovering all my old bad habits and adding a few new ones...

Here is a sample of my trumpet playing about 3 months back at this point
playing a 2-3 days a week 1/2 hour sessions
still cracking notes, not phrasing correctly, too slow, not reading it correctly etc.
But it is what it is

http://www.390kids.com/star%20dust.m4a

3 months later I am not cracking notes as much and phrasing much better
I could not play a D above C now hitting F sometimes...
but playing more like 5 times a week... and sounding much better

Yes, I believe that Maynard was probably the most proficient at playing triple high "C"s, at least with Stan kenton and with his own band later. He demonstrated this again at the Jr. prom weekend at Holy Cross College in 1962 where he and his band played in a half built home out in the middle of the campus grounds. This led to many of us purchasing many of his albums. Later, he was seen at the Blue Note in NYC where I frequently visited. He was good friends with Bud Herseth I'm told. Small world as some keep good friends who are doing other types of music.

I think you sound great for only a short time into it. If you haven't already you should look for some groups to play in the area. Lots of options, community bands, civic orchestras, brass bands, big bands, even a smaller nearby university that needs outside people to help fill empty seats in their ensembles.

Hi Everybody
First post as a new member. Not officially a comeback player yet as am still in the finding the right horn to play after a 28 year lay-off. Has it really been that long??
Sold my Bach 37 years ago and after seeing the prices on ebay, cringe...
Found a Blessing M-1 on Craigslist for a steal, has a good feel to it, so here we go until I can afford what I really want.
Trumpet was my life for 10 years, lead in High school jazz band then made it up to lead in the 2nd of 4 jazz bands at UF under Gary Langford. Never was able to crack into the elite first band. Those guys could blow!!

Anyway, looking forward to just having fun and sharing the experience with this site.

A most hearty welcome. I came back after 33 years off. I love playing more now than ever. I hope your journey is at least as enjoyable as mine has been!

tyler
what i learned as a comeback player is to get a good teacher. you can't avoid playing the exercise books as they are fundamental to building strength as a player. then you have to be shown when and how much to play, and when to rest.
i thought simply playing tunes would get me there. wrong.

Feel kind of weird going to a teacher at the age of 59

Why does/should it feel weird? I ask as age is nothing but a number. I know what it's like personally to hear "at your age no one is going to teach you how to play an instrument."

THat's exactly what I said, until I realized that:
- I wasn't so great
- no teacher was going to treat me like a kid
- if they did, they'd get smacked

I've gone to many friends I admire in music for a lesson, and I regret it, um, NEVER!
