rothman, who are the two in the photo (especially the Black man)?

You surely must be putting us all on, right? Are you sure you are a jazz lady?
That is the great Harry James and the great Louis Armstrong!

Excuse me, but people of all backgrounds come here to learn and embarrassing someone unnecessarily is not helpful.
There's nothing to lose personally by just answering the question.

Rothman.... listened to some other tunes played by Ray Anthony. Real name Ray Antonini). Fantastic sound! Has that Harry James style & tone. I didn't know much about him. He's still living at 101! Thanks for pointing him out!

Lived with "Swinging at the Tower" when I was a teen.

* Footnote *

Ray Anthony charted (Top Forty) a couple huge dance tunes in the early/mid 1950s.
"The Bunny Hop" and "The Hokey Pokey".

Definitely influenced by Harry James, stylistically.

Was married to starlet, Mamie Van Doren.

Internet photos show him brandishing a Martin Committee, and a Selmer (of some ilk), and others (?).

I see this post-topic has devolved into a "Harry James vs. Louis Armstrong" thing.

As expected, the usual "cork-sniffing" trolls have unleashed their venom on H. James supposed lack of jazz chops.

Oh, well .... ... nothing new here.

BTW -- are you aware that Kenneth Gorelick ("Kenny G") played the Bb part on Armstrong's hit tune, "It's A Wonderful World".?
Gorelick also is marginalized ad nauseam, due to the fact he is not a card-carrying jazzer.
Oh, the irony .

There is at least one 232-post long thread on saxontheweb.net about Kenny G dubbing over Louis Armstrong's rendition "A Wonderful World". Exciting to see this topic continue on TH - this time, from trumpet player perspective.

Most of the time here, there's an unwritten, or maybe a written rule, to try and have a foundation for some opinion, otherwise what you end up with is a type of 'blurting' of epithets in saying things 'half cocked' with no idea what you're talking about...

Interesting and at the same time a sad story. Who am I, or anyone else for that matter, to judge the man's personal life? Rather, I comment on the man when he's behind the horn. Regarding that, there might be those who had more range, maybe even more versatility if possible. But Harry's sweet, clean, & pure tone & the way it resonated; in my opinion, was the best.

If you play, no matter what level you're at; or, if you just have an appreciation for music & a good ear, you can have an opinion based on your understanding of what a good sound sounds like.

Some of you might enjoy, if you're not familiar with it, the movie "Young Man With a Horn". It stars Kirk Douglas, Doris Day and Lauren Bacal. It was hyped as a loose biography of Bix Beiderbecke but has no resemblance. Hollywood (sigh).

Yet, it's an enjoyable movie about a musician and the soundtrack is by Doris Day and Harry James. A favourite of mine.
