You know the drill by now hopefully! Tell me which one you liked and why... Thanks everyone for your input... This is a lot of fun!

Quick low-fi MP3 but I think it does clearly indicate the differences in each clip.

Best,

It seems like you felt more uncomfortable upstairs on #4, but I won't be sucked in by that alone. I think my favorite overall is #3. Seems more involving somehow than the others. I also liked #1 pretty well. Liked #2 the least.

I liked horn 3 the best, followed closely by horn 2. Then a big jump to horn 1 slightly edging horn 4.

For me, there was something about the tone of horns 3 and 2 that appealed to me. I thought they had a nice, solid, full sound.

I liked #2 the best - it had a definite Clark Terry ring to it. But I also liked #3.

FWIW - I find the reverb distracting. Personally, I would prefer it if you recorded these without it in order to capture as much of the natural sound of the horn as possible. Just my 2¢ worth. ...

But reverb covers up the numerous flaws in my sound . I also think it narrows the field down and homogenizes the sounds a bit more. If you can hear differences here then you will definitely hear it live and raw.

Thanks for voting and your comments! Cool stuff so far!

I love these posts. The bottom line is that you sound fantastic on all 4 horns.

I get the sense that you enjoy #3 the most. The sound is a bit more relaxed/dispersed than the others but it has the most personality in the sound.

Can't wait for the "reveal".

Keep the posts up!!!

For me it is without doubt the horn number 4! Waay better sound then the rest but I like a more traditional trumpet sound.

The other horns sound like heavy modern horns, a little matte sound, nothing wrong with that, just not exactly my taste.

I was listening to them last time on my new Blackberry. Now it's on the big computer. What horn is #1? It has the 'densest' sound with the most highs and lows together..It sounds like more of the classic dark jazz sound than the others. This is the horn I would want out of the 4..

Nice playing and great sound on all four. #2 and #3 seemed very close,
but for me #2 was the preferred. As before, please tell horn mouthpiece,
bell, and leadpipe.

The playing itself was awesome. Preferred number 3. Number 4 had an edgy transient, sounded vintage to me, maybe also 1 sounded a bit vintage.

Trent,
You bad, dude.
#3 was my fav as a jazz sound - there was a nice little roundness and compact tone to it. You also play differently on it - sounds like you're very comfortable immediately - sure sign of a good horn.

#4 sounded like it would be good in a big band - more cut and/or edge.

#1 and #2 were OK, less distinctive in tone quality.

#3 had the sound that drew my ears to it, compact ,round and distinctive.#2 seemed like a good compromise between the highs in the other horns and the mellowness of #3 also, you tended to play more melodically and less angular(IMHO) on #3 ,musically that is my preference and that choice displayed the distinct character of #3.

This is a fun thread. It's interesting to hear how people describe tones and how different horns appeal to a variety of people.

Number 3 had a classic, rich dark chocolate sound. It seems filled with core and has a richness that many people like. It's nice, but a bit heavy handed to my ear. It just seems too much. Number 4 had a bit of an edge that I don't care for. I prefer something with a lighter, caramel flavor. Number 1 is my first choice. The sound might be considered a bit smaller but I like it.

Also #4 is not bad at all, less "cream", more "edge" than #3.
By the way, are these 4 TRUMPETS...?
