your checking account information? I exceeded my initial sending limit and Ebay wants my checking or savings account number in order to finalize my recent purchase.
In order to 'Remove your Sending Limit' I must get Verified! Is this on the up-and-up? _________________ Allen - 'Chops-in-Hotlanta'

There are lots of bogus things going on, including a bogus PayPal message that sends you to a legit looking site. It's a jungle out there, people! Be careful.

Arb,
BE VERY CAREFUL!!!! Last week I got what looked to be a "legit" email from eBay asking for my login AND password info so they could verify it was actually me that had the account. It also informed me that my purchasing on ebay would be "limited" until I emailed them the info. I was actually irritated to the point that I emailed eBay (got contact info off their site) and told them rather than bothering me they should be going after the people running the scam auctions on their site! They emailed back and said the email I had originally received WAS A SCAM trying to get my info!!! They said they would have no need to ask me any of the info requested in the first email because it was already on file with them. Some people will try anything!!!

It must be something with Ebay because it said I had exceeded my sending limit by some $2.82; so I ask the seller if he would accept $3.00 less (he agreed) and when I entered it as a payment it was accepted, very odd though. I'll be giving Ebay a call tomorrow. _________________ Allen - 'Chops-in-Hotlanta'

I may be wrong but I think ebay may require a checking account or credit card if your email is not with a recognised ISP. For example if you sign up using a hotmail account they want the info to verify identity. I may be wrong. Correct me if I am. Been a while since I registered. I thought this was done when you register with ebay. I do know that they will never ask for info via email.

NOW HEAR THIS....Any email you receive from "ebay" or "Paypal" that requests information or verification of information should be forwarded to spoof@ebay.com with a simple inquiry as to its authenticity. DO NOT CLICK ON ANY PORTION OF THE EMAIL as that will automatical provide some information that can be used fraudulently. According to ebay....they will NEVER request information via email. They will ONLY request it via your ebay log in on the ebay site. I am sure of all this as I have communicated and forwarded several email notifications that I have received marked "ebay" or Paypal". Trust me. kpb |

Yes, but be VERY careful! I received an email from paypal.com (which is owned by Ebay) stating that they needed my Debit Card and/or checking account information along with my PIN number. I notified Ebay and Paypal because obviously this is a scam. NO ONE should be asking for your PIN number. Of course I never heard back from Paypal or Ebay, so I'm assuming that they fixed the situation. but to answer your questions... Yes, Ebay will definitely need that information (checking account or credit card number) if you start selling, but I have never heard of them asking for that info if all you do is buy. Maybe their policy has changed or something. _________________ J. Fowler

oh yeah - I got an email from hotmail once asking to verify my username and password, I knew it was a scam, I read the email code to see where the info was actually being sent to and it was not hotmail... If hotmail needed to verity somthing it would do i during my login....
I also went as far as trying track down the IP address the email orginally came from, it ended up being in another country.... - i emailed hotmail and got a reply that since the email did not come from them they could not do anything about it....
I must have gotten the id10t of the group...
i emailed back and said - how about sending an mass email warning hotmail users to disregard that mail and also filter the email out on the server so no one would ever get the email that has not already logged in and given up their account informaton - if they (microsoft) needed help putting in the filter they could call me and i would tell them what to do to the exchange server...
no reply of course on that email... I am sure whoever got that mail was pretty embarrased - the last id10t was letting a breach of secuity just continue...
the next day it was all over the msnbc web site....
anyways that the bigger of the scams that have come my way...
I got to be honest, I hate spam... if i receive the same more than twice then watch out!
I will track down their website they want you to buy stuff from.. get the info and email the admin that is hosting thier site to let them know they are in violatoin...
once i had a web site removed in less than 24 hours!!! - they sold precription drugs at lower costs but after not getting a reponse from their own webpage I looked them up, found out who was hosting thier site.... found the HOME email address of the owner of the ISP and let him know that a site he was hosting was spaming and fowarded like 10 of the emails to him as proof... I struck a nerve on that one.... that guy was mad and a little freaked out that he was emailed at home but after reading my email and all the attachment he replied and let me know that they are not allowed to do this and where in violaion of their hosting agreement and he no longer host their site and aplogized for my inconvience.... the web site was gone the next day.... why can't they just take you off thier list if you ask them too?
let's see then there was the home mortage on i kept getting like everyday for a week- rough time on that one.. email accout was alredy closed but it was a from everytime.. yeah, i could install a pogram to do a reverse lookup and delete it before it comes in, but where is the fun in that for a computer jocky... anways i read the code... It was actually sending the information to his icu account.... I sent that guys icu account so many complaints and the emails magically stopped...
then there was some one spamming me with porn... poor sucker actually had all his home contact info in the look up directory, what an id10t...
i emailed his web site, his host site and his own personal addres to ask to be removed from his spam list seveal times - I could not block it... they just kept comming at least once a day.... he used a differnet email addresss evertime and only a picture - subject was always different too... still did not want to install a program to help - this guy was offending me.... I never received a reply to any of the emails - not even the guys home email address .... after about two weeks his constant span of it was pretty worked up - a phone call to his house cured it... I know that sounds harsh but I was pretty offended by the spam itself...
anyone else have a good story on this subject?

fuzzyjohn79...The first time I received on of these emails withe ebay or Paypal in the address I "notified ebay and did not get a reply. When I received another, I notified ebay with a request for a response and did get a reply that it was a fraudulent email and was given the key to identifying an authentic email address. Since then ebay has developed the spoof@ebay.com address and all these emails that may be suspect should simply be forwarded with a question about the authenticity and ebay will reply and in the reply are specific hints and instructions and a statement of what ebay and Paypal will and won't do. I never click onto any portion of any email that I am not sure of because merely clicking onto the sit provides information and this can then be used fraudulently. kpb |

My ebay spending was limited because I never got the "verified account" by going through the bank transactions. I got around it by getting a PayPal Visa card, however, I would still face the problem if I was a seller. It sounds like the request may be legit if you have never done the bank transaction bit. _________________ Ed Taylor . . . a Messianic gentile |

If you get requests for pesonal information vie email from Ebay, Paypal, or anyone else... DO NOT click on any of the links in the email. Go to the website by typing in the URL directly (or using "Favorites"); if there are any special notices or requirements it will be on their website. All links in emails which appear to come from Ebay, Paypal, Microsoft, etc. should be considered suspect. Consider this: if PayPal "lost" all of their customer information, don't you think you'd read about the scandal or hear about it on the news in short order?
Repeat: Enter any required personal information directly through the real website which you get to by typing in the site URL. (from someone who received 8 email notices IN THE SAME DAY from his "alleged" ISP "security" requesting information but who got suspicious and went to the ISP via telephone.... it was a scam). |

NO NO NO do not respond to that e-mail. I've received it at least 3 times. A co-worker of mine actually filled it out ... including the part with his credit card numbers and he has since cancelled all of them.
I went through all of the fields and enterred in some creative obscenities and it still gave me the "Ok" message to start bidding again ... definite scam. I have since notified Ebay about it and copied the e-mail to them and they are still investigating it.
It even looks legit but that's cause they are spoofing it to look like an Ebay e-mail sent from an E-bay site ... i.e. aw-confirm......
Never EVER enter in your credit card information cause an e-mail says to. _________________ Bb - Yamaha Xeno 8335RGS

Josh...cute idea, that....filling in the blanks with "cr*p". I love it. "As ye sow, so shall ye reap". gosh, it's even Biblical. ) Only caveat is, make darn sure your virus definitions are up to date BEFORE opening any email and make certain you turn OFF the "preview pane". |
