Pocket Max came today from http://www.charlescolin.com/pocketmax/ . I ordered it on Monday and it was waiting for me today when I got home. What you see in the add is exactly what you get. The workmanship is about on par for a good student line horn. The slides all work easily and the valves are monel and are first class. I am more surprised with the sound than anything else. Open, bright, and free blowing. It sounds like a trumpet to me. I’ve played through a few Arban”s (of course) and I’m quite impressed with its sound and playability. The bell is so close to you however that it sounds much louder to me than my regular trumpet or even Cornet. Given the Junk one usually finds with a Pocket Trumpet, this is a pleasant surprise and at $600 I think a bargain. |

Thanks for the update and web site. I have a pocket trumpet that I am not thrilled with.
Give us an up-date when you have had a chance to play it a little longer.
Thanks,

I think you'll find that regular mutes will fit the Max too. When I had mine I'd practice late at night with my Wick practice mute. Truth be told one of the reasons I "had" to sell my Max pocket was because I spent more time playing it than I did my regular horn. As others have posted in other threads they are great for playing etudes at traffic lights too! _________________ All murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.

Have had a chance to check it with a tuner. 1-3 and 123 are extreemly sharp with all slides in. There is a 1st vale thumb throw but there isn't enough clearance to adjust it out far enough. However with the 3rd valve slide pulled out about 3/4" the whole thing works OK. Very easy and free blowing in the low and middle register but kinda stuffy in the upper register. |

Question: Who's shown playing that horn in all the pictures on the website? _________________ Trumpet: Bach 180LR, 72 bell

I've had mine for a couple of years now. Very nice to take on vacation and with the full size bell, my practice mute work fine. It's a little cramped for my large hands but that's just one of the many compromises I live with daily. When I got mine it cost $450 plus shipping in lacquer. Looked at/played both the Benge and Kanstul models and didn't see a significant difference worth another $500 - $600.
It's not a Calicchio but what the heck, it's better than the majority you find on eBay!!

That's my friend Omar Kabir on the pocketmax website. He's been playing great trumpet in NYC and all over the world for a long time. |

I have Jupiter Pocket.
It's not the same as Max Pocket however there is no difference in using accesaries such as mutes.
However, outlook of mute + pocket trumpet is weired ~ grothesque; mutes extrude musch more than conventional trumpet.
It looks like that Max has bigger bell than Jupiter's or Indian pockets. So I'm not sure Max has the same problem(?). |

Who makes this horn for Colin? For that matter, who makes the full size Max now? It used to be Kanstul on the full size.

By the way Omar Kabir kicks! He's a great player and a nice guy too. Check him out on Hugh Ragin's (another great player) album (can't remember the title at the moment).
Cheers,

A Pocket trumpet sounds like something nice to add to my collection but I don't know much about them. Can anyone give some info on these horns? I would spend no more than $300 (S&H included) for a used one. Does anyone have any good suggestions?
Thanks,

I would stay far, far away from those chinese/indian/pakistani pocket trumpets on ebay. As the Gearhead site says, they're a bad choice.
