ok... I am trying to get in as much practice as possible... and walking down to the music building is a big waste of time... so, my teach recommended getting a practice mute and just go to the basement lobby (2 floors down from anyone sleeping) and play there.
problem is... money is always at short supply as a student.
i have heard of home made mutes with socks and stuff, but... what works best?

Put a sock on it! A heavy sock, that is.
I use a harmon with the stem in, but pulled almost out (but still in). That keeps some of the stem-out sound, but the intonation is good; you can play all registers.
