I can unequivocally say..your are incorrect. And you are absolutely incorrect .
You can practice and study for a lifetime and never play a note that has the intuitive gravity and depth of expression found in one.note of some of the unstudied players like Chet and Stan...Lee breathed it at 17. And he knew more than Chet or Stan. Enjoy your journey..but I can tell you without a doubt..neither Chet or Stan cared to know.more than God gave them. It's why they played the way they did. Stan told me every player has to..first..find his own voice and be true to it. And Stan..idolized Chet.

This is interesting but for me a little bit too fast.
First: who is incorrect?
Second: who is Lee and what is his role in this?

Pretty sure he was referring to Lee Morgan. Also seemed pretty clear he was responding to EBjazz (the post right before his).

Lee Morgan was playing his ass off with Dizzy's band at 17. When that live record came out, lots of people confused the two.

Then it's a language problem. You see, I am only a dutchman and we love to think that we are good in English but now I have to admit that subtle things are passing me by.
I don't see anything contradictory in the posts of Eric and mcgovnor, for me they agree. And I still don't see any connection with Lee Morgan. Quite a different player though IMHO.

I can 100% unequivocally and absolutely state that every single one of you is 100% wrong about every single thing you (or anyone you associate with) has ever said or written. At least I'm pretty sure.

Chromatic resolution. You're only a half step away from the "correct" note. Yes, I meant to put some tension there and then I released it.

HA!

Or, he played some wrong notes. Whichever floats your boat I guess.

Sometimes, people write things about the past. Then sometimes they'll put those things in books. Then, years later, people find those books. This is called reading.

Cool. I'm never too old to learn - thankfully. And I look a lot younger than I am too. Unfortunately, there are days I feel a lot older . . . !

Chet Baker certainly knew chords and scales-you can see from playing through transcriptions that he certainly knew chords and how they functioned, and scales that go with them.

If someone went up to him and asked him something about what he played, he might not have looked at it the same way as the person asking the question, but that doesn't mean he didn't know theory. It would be my bet that he knew more that the person asking the question. To state that he didn't is just not true :)

One of my pianist friends who worked a lot with Chet told me a story. They were rehearsing But Not for Me. There are a couple of different common sets of changes. One way is to start the tune on the I chord. Another way is to start on the II7 (actually the V of V). They were playing in F major, BTW. After they played through the tune Chet stopped the band. He went over to the piano and said, "The first chord isn't this." Then he played a super simple G7 root position, no extensions, etc. "It's this." And played a root position Fmaj7 (4 notes). He didn't know what to call it. He didn't know hip voicings. However, he did know THE SOUND.

Chet wasn't from the theory study hard analyze Transcribe boy this is a challenge I must meet school. He was from the ears women narcotics beat generation school. And he could let it drop off his chin like spilled milk. Just like Stan. As I said enjoy the journey make your money and whatever but Chet didn't know too much and neither did Stan. They were just gifted and really understood their talent..they knew it..and believed it because it was obvious. .naturally..they were better than everyone else.[/i]
